SERRA event next Saturday - had an "interesting" problem with my Tony P (RIP) F1 car. It tested bad - too loose and a tilting pile - the worst of both worlds. Back in 2014 when he built it, they weren't using super strong magnet FK motors. All rails and pans on this car were wire. The new motor was lifting the ISO pans and locking them in full upright position. So I stripped the parts off and shelved the chassis as memorabilia  :)

Plotting a ship's position on a chart back in the 1980's sometimes required what we called a "quick and dirty" fix. Not as precise as the usual 3 lines of bearing, but when you need a quickie, 2 lines is a fix. So I'm naming this car as such.

I have four days to get this up and running. There will be nothing perfect, pretty, or new here, other than entertainment watching me thrash  :laugh2:

FSF motor bracket holes are sized for tubes, but I hogged them out to 1/4" and soldered in Slick 7 reducer bushings to 3/32 axle. 2 degree CR tongue. May use the brass pans shown, not sure. Body will be a RTR M7.

Rails will probably be single .078 wires a la Sano Dave Fiedler, and brass pans for sure. It's for a 130' flat track so the basic plan is, lots of flex and movements  :pardon:

Pablo,

What are you doing up at at 3 am? I thought Greg was suppose to be there, hope you didn't wake him up too, unless you haven't been to bed yet.  :)

I'm a night owl.

Greg's mission got cancelled due to circumstances beyond his control.

Greg just called me. He said his trip got cancelled because his loan didn't go through to buy a tank of gas.

brassy will visit another day I'm sure. Gotta go tin some .078 piano wire and make a 1/16 x 1" brass chunk nosepiece .....

Decided to go with a single pair of .063 rails. Pan plan is a pair of .090 x 1/4" brass strips connected together. They will need a little shaving width-wise.

I remember years ago Rob Hansen gave me a D3 F1 with the thick pans, and man it was a bullet. So I'll try it. Front upright pieces are from a Flying Slot Factory kit

Where did you get 0.090 brass?

It's not a thickness many shops will stock, but the online metal shops should have it. Chicagoland may have it too. I found some a couple years ago at a local Ace Hardware store but not in all widths.

Pablo there are a lot of Dennis Samson's builds out there with .063 and a single brass rail companioned with it.  It helps dampen the ride quite well without adding a lot of stiffness. FWIW

I agree. A brass rail inside the steel with a 90 degree bend going up the front of the bracket.

I don't disagree with that, and I'm certainly no stranger to using wire and brass combinations.

One has to be careful to not solder them together for long lengths or it curls up like a Pringles chip.

But I don't think it's in the cards for this build. My focus is on a flat track, not a swoopy king.

This race is going to be won in the esses. I made my bed and I'm going to lay in it  :D

I appreciate the input, gentlemen. I'm up against the clock ......... race is on Saturday

The "quick n dirty" isn't finished yet, I ran out of time. It sits as an experiment to be finished another day ...... Team Soddy-Daisy is moving forward to a new Dominator F1 kit ......

I will complete it some day. I still believe in those .090 thick pans but it's going to take some thinking to make them work .......  :)

This IS the flat track build!  FWIW

"Quick n dirty" F1 work continues. .090 pans cross-connected, but not yet "movement-managed". Pin tubes are 1 5/8" apart and do double-duty as connectors in addition to the .047 Swiss wires.

At this point, I'm still able to lift (finagle) the pan assembly off the center section. That will change soon LOL It's heavy, flat, fits the chassis precisely, legal width, and strong. I still can't promise it will work - we shall see. The only way to fail is to never try

Thanks but remember this is uncharted territory at the boundaries of experimentation and sanity

One-piece pan assembly is managed and left "loose" with a considerable amount of wiggle, side-to-side shift, and some lift. It can easily be tuned tighter in multiple different places. Rough scrubbed for now ....

Pinch painted body with Noose interior in the background. Assembly complete, total weight 117 grams. I added a 1/2 x 5/8" piece of .032 lead to my shakey platform. CR 102 with 11/28 gears. Lead wires are just temporary for testing.

She passes the drivetrain test perfect. Track test should be interesting, to see if it sucks or rocks  :umnik2:  If it behaves on a 130" flat track I think it will work on a banked King   :)

Balance point is at the Sharpie mark

Looks Great Pablo! I think you may find a 10 tooth pinion works better on a curvy flat track though. I would show up with a 10 and go up if needed. :)

Track test today - handles very well, no bad habits and the speed is ballistic. I slammed it into a wall (my mistake), the crown came loose and shredded. First retro crown I've ever spun. Maybe with these new motors I need to start using flats?

Very happy with the results. Team Soddy-Daisy has a month to tune this thing. It totally reminds me of Rob Hanson's .090 pan retro F1 years ago. And that's what I was looking for  :sun_bespectacled:
