Eric's first 1/24th scale slot cars were Revell brand.  A couple of them were given to Eric by his brother back in the mid '60s, when Eric was about ten years old.  The cars are long gone, but Eric remembers how much fun they were to run and how nice they looked.  I remember the Revell cars being for sale at the local J.J. Newberry Store.  They even had a couple of them on top of the cash register for sale.  The cars were cool, with their bright metallic paint jobs.  The cars came with either a brass or aluminum chassis.  As Eric and I remember, the aluminum ones were the cars of choice.  The aluminum chassis cars were very easy to drive and fairly durable, whereas the brass ones would fold up into a pretzel after one wall shot.

I decided to build the green Lotus for Eric.  I patterned the set-up of the car after the Ben Jones "day glow red" Ford GT.  Ben ran the red car in many vintage races over the years.  The Lotus was carefully assembled and has ball bearings and silicone rear tires installed.  If you run these cars, the pinion gear is probably cracked.  I recently ran the Ben Ford GT, and the pinion gear exploded.  I installed a brass pinion gear to replace the plastic one.

I decided to assemble a Revell car for myself.  The brass chassis pieces came from the Ben Jones parts box.  I made three junk ones into one good one.  The chassis pieces needed some straightening.  I had a painted Lancer Mustang body to use.  The chassis wheelbase was extended with bits of tubing to match the Mustang.  The chassis was then soldered together.  I later realized that soldering the chassis together prevented the removal of the motor.

All of the cars are nice to drive and have good power.  Ben's car has a hot Mabuchi armature and is faster.  The Mustang has fresh German tires that work very well.  Yes, for novice slot car racers, the Revell cars ran good out of the box and were easy to drive.

I built a Revell brass chassis slot car with a Genie body for Eric.  This one replicates the other car Eric's brother gave him when he was around ten years old.

The car Eric received from his brother came with an unpainted Genie body, so this build starts with an unpainted body.  Detail added to clear body.

New chassis kit assembled.  Buzco wheels.  Riggen tires glued and trued.  Revell 36D motor with hot armature installed.  Dynamic spur gear and Cox pinion gear.  Revell guide.

Great build Rodney, Hi Eric.

This Genie body is a model of Don Westers Huffaker Geine mark 10 according to the late Joe Huffaker. RIP. It was the only Genie with the outlets on top of the front fenders.

Here is a pic of the instruction sheet I have, with a credit to Joe. Not sure if you all saw this thread I started a few weeks ago?

I've always liked these cars and they are decent for the time period.   The Genie is my favorite.

I never had a Revell slot car, not for any particular reason, but I never liked Revell model kits. Perhaps that was my reason. I currently have a '40 Ford coupe kit reissued by Revell, so all that may change.

Matt, thanks for the pictures.  I decided to install a driver after seeing the green car.  Eric wanted a Cox/Champion driver figure.  Arms too long.  So, I went with the Revell driver that came with the Genie body.  The base that was part of the driver figure was cut off to lower the driver.

Bill, I remember early Revell models having opening doors and lots of parts that would break while removing them from the sprues.  Could never get the doors to work properly.

That old "happy boy" driver does fit these cars and helps the looks quite a bit.   I have a couple other Genies, blue and red.    Some of those rtr cars came with the Red Streak motor and they were pretty good performers.

I left the interior base in mine, but put a flat black card that the driver is glued to, then another piece of card under the interior (inside the body) so it blocks the view of the chassis.Still need to glue the roll-bar to the card base too.Mr Smiley is the only way to go for sure.

I think we have a Genie convention here.

FYI, Joe Huffaker Sr. wife's name is Jeanie and that's what inspired the name for the car.

Very nice Matt and Martin.  I cobbled together one more Revell brass chassis (parts from the slot car junk yard) and mounted a used Hussein l body on it.  I do not know who did the wild paint and interior work on the Hussein body.

The Hussein is great Rod.   I like those custom paint jobs.    Martin, that's a good interior treatment.   I have just been putting the black card under the interior.  I may have to work over my cars and update like yours.    I have 4-5 Genies in all colors except green.   That is my favorite.   I painted and rough copy body, but couldn't match the color.   I kind of keep looking, but acquiring more cars is not high on list anymore.   That said, there was a near new one of Ebay last week and I was tempted!

I had a bunch of those Spacesaver frames a few years ago and I had some NOS Revell Mustang bodies.   If I remember correctly, I was able to stretch out the frame to fit the Mustang wheelbase.    I will see if I can find a pic.

I think I have a correct chassis and wheels for the red Genie and I should go over it now and replace the K&B Cobra mags that are on it.   I guess I'm not alone at having a few cars that need restoring, even though they look OK as they are.    Threads like this bring back interest in some of these cars and then I work over a few!

Matt, your Mustang has the look!  I built this Mustang years ago for a vintage race.  Revell aluminum chassis.  I do not remember the brand of the body.
