Recent find. I was fortunate to obtain this car from a gentleman who is the godson of the man who made it.

The original owner is Karl T. Baughman, who did some design work for Sears although I have not found confirmation that this car specifically was made as a prototype for Sears to produce.

If someone may be able to confirm that the body is a production item, I would be glad to be set straight. Conversely, if anyone recognizes this is as an actual prototype, I would certainly appreciate the insight.

Thanks,

Mark

You come up with the darnedest things Mark.

Baugham was I think credited as the body designer on the SPC-100 Thingie by MPC and sold by Sears, so maybe this was a prototype of an initial design. Not much of a family resemblance except the chassis and the bubble top.

Kind of a rough mockup, but then there's the hard body...

Have never seen or heard of this before,

Don

Karl T. Baughman, as shown on side of the car.

The white stripe as shown below appears to be the same on the posted prototype

I met a former Sears product manager twenty-five years ago at a trade show that told me Sears was hot to market an exclusive "thingie" slot car back in the late '60s!

Slot cars had been hot and Sears knew that they could build future customers with such a product. Slot cars today and everything else tomorrow!

Apparently they also approached Cox as well but after six months the project fell through. That project was going to be a variation of the La Cucaracha including a molded poly body similar to the Cuc.

Good eye on the stripes, Gene; I concur.

Interesting heavy buttresses under the body.

Only thing missing is the famous Sears/MPC through the body mounting screws that spoiled many of their cars in my opinion.

Longshot, but does anyone know if Mr. Baughman is still alive?  :unknw: He may able to confirm.
