I apologize that it has taken me a week to post race results for our second retro race of 2022. Who knew that life would be so busy after I retired.
As usual, racers came from all around eastern Washington, making the trek from Spokane (in the north), Wenatchee area (northwest), Tri-Cities (southwest) and across the eastern border to Moscow, Idaho.
In all, we had 11 racers, and enjoyed a fantastic day of racing in Leroy Sander's outstanding multi-track facility. And the racing was very competitive, with three different winners in the first three classes and 5 different people sharing podium finishes, and some new racers thrashing it out with long-time veterans.
Stock Cars
We led off the day with Stock cars on the red track, aka "Leroy's track." The lap counter counted down, everyone hit the throttle, and three of the four cars leapt forward. My car sat stock still. We halted the race, and after fumbling for a while discovered that each lane has a power switch. A black switch, on a black background, I was unware of its existence, and apparently tripped it off while hooking up my controller. We flipped the switch, and lined up the cars once again.
Again the countdown. Again three cars screamed off the line. And my car...went backward. The switch has 3 settings, which allows races to be run in the opposite direction.
Third time was a charm, and the rest of the day would go almost completely glitch-free, except for one other occasion when the power switch would accidentally get tripped again. In this first class, Tom Sunday and Garrett Sisk would battle for the lead the entire race, with the outcome not settled until the final heat, with "Mr. Sunday" eking out the win. Results:
1. Tom Sunday 136 laps, best lap 4.56 on green
2. Garrett Sisk 133, 4.27 on blue (Garrett finished in a backup car after a "broken chassis" crash)
3. Robert Clements 132, 4.76 on green
4. Leroy Sanders 129, 4.90 on green
5. Tom Brown 124, 4.69 on green
6. Paul Dwyer 124, 4.90 on green
7. Ken Bryan 121, 4.98 on blue (the three "Spokane Boys" made of the center of the pack, finishing together at 5-6-7)
8. Greg Bear 119, 5.16 on red
9. Paul Quiglietta 115, 5.49 on yellow
10. John Wimett 111, 5.10 on blue
11. Larry Flyn 83, 6.27 on green (have you figured out by now that green is the fast lane?)
The cars
We follow the original D3 rules from So Cal, which allows either inline or anglewinder cars in 2 classes (stock car and coupe). Anglewinders predominate, but there is a mix, as you can see here, and both are competitive.
