I apologize that it has taken me a week to post race results for our second retro race of 2022.  Who knew that life would be so busy after I retired.

As usual, racers came from all around eastern Washington, making the trek from Spokane (in the north), Wenatchee area (northwest), Tri-Cities (southwest) and across the eastern border to Moscow, Idaho.

In all, we had 11 racers, and enjoyed a fantastic day of racing in Leroy Sander's outstanding multi-track facility.  And the racing was very competitive, with three different winners in the first three classes and 5 different people sharing podium finishes, and some new racers thrashing it out with long-time veterans.

Stock Cars

We led off the day with Stock cars on the red track, aka "Leroy's track."  The lap counter counted down, everyone hit the throttle, and three of the four cars leapt forward.  My car sat stock still.  We halted the race, and after fumbling for a while discovered that each lane has a power switch.  A black switch, on a black background, I was unware of its existence, and apparently tripped it off while hooking up my controller.  We flipped the switch, and lined up the cars once again.

Again the countdown.  Again three cars screamed off the line.  And my car...went backward.  The switch has 3 settings, which allows races to be run in the opposite direction.

Third time was a charm, and the rest of the day would go almost completely glitch-free, except for one other occasion when the power switch would accidentally get tripped again.  In this first class, Tom Sunday and Garrett Sisk would battle for the lead the entire race, with the outcome not settled until the final heat, with "Mr. Sunday" eking out the win.  Results:

1.  Tom Sunday           136 laps, best lap 4.56 on green

2.  Garrett Sisk            133, 4.27 on blue         (Garrett finished in a backup car after a "broken chassis" crash)

3.  Robert Clements     132, 4.76 on green

4.  Leroy Sanders        129, 4.90 on green

5.  Tom Brown              124, 4.69 on green

6.  Paul Dwyer              124, 4.90 on green

7.  Ken Bryan                121, 4.98 on blue          (the three "Spokane Boys" made of the center of the pack, finishing together at 5-6-7)

8.  Greg Bear                119, 5.16 on red

9.  Paul Quiglietta         115, 5.49 on yellow

10.  John Wimett           111,  5.10 on blue

11.  Larry Flyn                83,  6.27 on green        (have you figured out by now that green is the fast lane?)

The cars

We follow the original D3 rules from So Cal, which allows either inline or anglewinder cars in 2 classes (stock car and coupe).  Anglewinders predominate, but there is a mix, as you can see here, and both are competitive.

Next up were the formula cars, my favorite class, and run on the "blue (or Ken's) track."  Racing in this class was even more competitive, with 5 laps separating first place and fifth.  Hometown hero Leroy Sanders demonstrated that he is not only a threat on his own track, but can win on my old track as well, as he held off all comers for a first place finish, edging out Garrett Sisk by 1 and yours truly by 3.

We start racing at 11, and break for lunch after the second race of the day.  But with 11 racers, and a glitch or two, our stomachs were definitely growling by the time we made our way through this class.  So Cheryl and Leroy's usual great lunch spread (sub sandwiches and cheesecake) was well appreciated.  Thanks again for being such good hosts.

Results.

1.  Leroy Sanders             116 laps, best lap 5.55 on red

2.  Garrett Sisk                  115, 5.57 on green

3.  Ken Bryan                    113, 5.63 on green

4.  Robert Clements          112, 5.56 on green

5.  Tom Sunday                 111, 5.59 on blue

6.  Paul Dwyer                   108, 5.73 on blue

7.  Tom Brown                    107, 5.65 on blue

8.  John Wimett                    97, 6.03 on green

9.  Greg Bear                       96, 6.52 on blue

10.  Paul Quiglietta              91, 5.43 on red

11.  Larry Flyn                      76, 7.51 on green

Lunch done, we settle back into the last two classes of racing, with coupe on the red track and Can-Am back on the blue.

After a couple of close seconds, Garrett dominated the coupe class, winning by 9 laps.  Meanwhile the rest of the field found little separation from one another, as 6 of the other 10 racers wound up in ties, including the remaining podium positions.  When the dust had settled, the results looked like this (names in bold were involved in ties):

1.  Garrett Sisk                147 laps, best lap 4.32 in green

2.  Robert Clements        138, 4.49 in green

3.  Tom Sunday                138, 4.28 in red

4.  Ken Bryan                    130, 4.85 in blue

5.  Paul Dwyer                  127, 4.74 in green

6.  John Wimett                123, 4.92 in green

7.  Leroy Sanders             123, 4.87 in blue

8.  Greg Bear                    118, 5.17 in red

9.  Tom Brown                   118, 5.25 in yellow

10.  Paul Quaglietta           103, 5.18 in yellow

11.  Larry Flyn                      83, 6.04 in red

The cars

Note there were 5 inlines and 6 anglewinders.  An inline won the race.  And interestingly, the Marcos Mantis, which has a nice aerodynamic shape but requires a very short chassis, finished second.

Final class of the day.  One racer had to leave, so we finished the last class with 10 drivers.  In the CanAm class, Garrett finished out the day with his fourth podium and second win.  But this one was a closer affair, as he edged me out by a single lap.  The top three finishers were side by side in the final heat, and the standings were not clear until the final lap.

John Wimett ran a strong race, finishing firmly in fourth place.  Places 5 through 8 were separated by only 3 laps, and I do not know who won the tiebreaker between Paul Dwyer and Robert Clements, so will list that as a tie.

1.  Garrett Sisk                117 laps, best lap 5.42 in blue

2.  Ken Bryan                   116, 5.53 in blue

3.  Tom Sunday                114, 5.33 in green (fastest lap overall and in 3 of the 4 lanes)

4.  John Wimett                111, 5.58 in blue

5.  Tom Brown                  106, 5.75 in blue

6.  Leroy Sanders             105, 5.66 in red

7T  Robert Clements         103, 5.74 in red

7T  Paul Dwyer                 103, 5.79 in red

9.  Greg Bear                      93, 6.54 in green

10.  Larry Flyn                     75, 6.88 in red
