Nine Regulars showed up to race Econo and Vintage NASCAR on 5/2/22. The track had been recently cleaned and sprayed. Conditions were a bit tight for Vintage Econo but excellent for Flexi cars.
Vintage Econo
Studebakers swept the top three positions in the Vintage Econo race. It has become obvious that the Studebaker body is the one to beat because it is quite low and light. Other observers recognized this, and quickly scoured Bob’s models for sale. Lowell latched onto the only remaining Studebaker model in the collection while others cried (not really).
The battle for the top step of the podium was between Rich and Mark. Going into the final heat both had completed 65+ laps with Rich about a half lap ahead of Mark. Both knew that the final heat would determine the race winner as others were laps behind. From the outset, Rich began to widen the gap between the two. Both ran clean final heats, but in the end Rich won finishing with 86.1 laps with Mark nearly a lap behind to finish second. Ron, Bob, Joe and Lowell battled for the bottom step of the podium. Ron’s Studebaker was the best of the rest finishing third with 81.8 laps.
Observations
- Bob’s Ford was plagued by gear problems which severely impacted his lap totals, otherwise he would have been in the mix for the win
- Joe races with his hair on fire and this contest was no exception. Unfortunately, pushing hard with new tires and a tight track was not a good strategy. This led to several unforced errors, relegating Joe to a fifth place finish. His Ford is certainly capable of vying for the top spot on the podium but not this time.
- Lowell and Scott both achieved personal bests.
- Rich’s Studebaker was the ugly duckling entry. It had not been painted and green tape lengths were used as the #1. It should look better next time we race this class.

Lowell shattered his prior personal best by more than seven laps resulting in a first place finish in the handicap competition. Rich was second and Mark was third
Flexi
The battle for the top step of the podium was between Rich and Bob. Unfortunately, Bob was involved in some racing incidents while Rich ran a clean race to finish first.
Meanwhile, Joe and Mark battled for the bottom step of the podium. Joe’s quicker flexi prevailed finishing a distant third with Mark fourth.
Observations
- The motor on Joe’s Flexi went away in the final heat; otherwise he would have been battling for second place or better. Subsequent to the race, Joe purchased a new motor and body. Look out guys.
- Bob had a poor heat on the yellow lane; otherwise he would have challenged Rich for the top spot
