On this chassis, the bottom side looks like a Mura while the top looks like a Champion. Am I going crazy?

I see what you are getting at.

I raced back then but I'm not a Champion can expert.

Weren't some closed on one side?

If so, I bet the racer drilled his own 2 holes, for more ventilation.

Concur. It's a Champion can with a rectangular opening on the top, the bottom had no openings but someone drilled two holes in it. Mura didn't countersink EB attachment screws like that. Last time I checked, Professor Motor was selling cans exactly like that (without the 2 holes)

If I were you I would look into bidding on the Tony P built  car the same seller has. Much better condition too! :)

Whoever it is, he's had a dozen or so chassis from Buzzie's on eBay for a week.

You can always tell a non slotter who just buys stuff to sell on eBay, Tony Q, Ferrett, Riggen and all. The Tony Q car will sell well despite the missed credit? The other stuff not so much!

There is so much grunge on that Tony P. chassis that you can't read all of the engraving on the drop arm photos. It's not at all unusual that eBay sellers don't what it is when they sell slot car items.

This thread makes me want to dig out a bunch of old Retro chassis, dip them in Stay Clean flux so they corrode all to hell and then put them on Ebay.  :laugh2:

Be sure to mention they came from Pappy's Raceway in your writeups. That ought to be worth an extra buck.  :laugh2:

In the photos it looks like it is a Mura two-hole can that has had the holes on the top side connected and enlarged for better cooling.

The end plate on the can doesn't look like a Mura's. The top hole might have been modified but the photos aren't clear. To do much good, those bottom holes should have been larger.

The small 0-80 countersunk holes indicate it was originally a Champion.

Before my good friend Dave Crevie theorizes the flat head screws were another modification, I'll point no apparent pin tab holes and closed corners like a drawn(?) Champion can.

Also, the Champion ventilation slots on the end.

PS-just saw Bill's post.

Good observation, Mike. The end of the can is a dead giveaway. As the owner of 3 or 4 Champion 517 motors, I can confirm that's a Champion can.
