A friend is purchasing a Trik Trax magnet zapper. They were given no instructions other than "push the button."

I did some digging around, and found a thread on another site that indicated you put the can/magnet/slug assembly in vertically with the magnets oriented between the holders and press the button for one second or so.

Does anyone have a bit more info? Does anyone have instructions?

I gather that this is basically a big electromagnet that's just zapping the can with its super magnetism and would be fine for ceramic magnets.

Any further info would be helpful, as I think I'll end up being the "magnet zapper operator trainer."

Thanks in advance.

Id suggest to him that he should buy a capacitive discharge zapper. The small high output units will provide better results and you dont need a forklift to move it around.

Zapper information is, from what I've found is vague to say the least. I bid on a Simco but at,$250.00+, not knowing what I could do with it...I backed out.
If you have magnets from open frame to Polly neos, what do you buy? Is there a one size fits all?

I'm not sure it's possible to re-magnetize cobalt or neo magnets, and the results I've gotten with ceramic magnets were a waste of time/money. I couldn't tell any difference after the zap. Now I just replace magnets when that's possible.

The big zappers are handy if you do a lot of non-can motors like a lot of the vintage stuff, plus they can accommodate cans if needed. No, they don't go in your pit box. If you doubt the results, it is simple enough to meter the magnets. If you look back at many of dc-65x's motor builds, you can see the improvement.

I don't know about the Trik Trax zapper but here are the instructions for my Carisle:

This is how can type magnets, with or without the can, are oriented in the zapper (with an armature slug that's not shown of course):

The Carlisle and Trix Trax are pretty much the same on instructions.  They can't do Neo or Cobalt magnets - they are for doing C-Can style magnets.

And for vintage crazies like me, they can zap the old motor too   :D  :dance3:

I know, I know I could have bought one of Rick's great air core Zappers at 1/3 the cost. But ever since I was a kid and saw that mysterious box that remagnetized motors behind the raceway counter I've wanted one. Life is short (and getting shorter!), retirement is coming (I HOPE!) so now seemed like the time to take the plunge wink.gif .

Looky what it can do. This is what I remember from back in the 60's. Just spin the two gizmos around:

Just found the REH paper on the Carisle zapper. So this will do open frame, laminated and, cans? Ok what about Bonners ?

It's not just the shape of the motor. it has more to do with the composition of the magnet material. Rick has built with Bonners, he will jump in here. My Simco is the grandfather to the Carlisle & Trix Trax.

Hi Don,

There's a "Korrect" way to zap a Bonner that is shown in this post from Steve Okeefe. I zap each magnet individually in this orientation and the motors come alive:

I hope this helps get your Bonner's back on track. :)

Thanks guys. Had a chance at a simco a few weeks back. Seemed reasonable (?) At less than $400. Stopped bidding because I didn't know if it was what I needed.
Yes BillNH, I realize there are differences in composition. I thought it would be simpler to just list the motors.
From the previous posts, I've found out that cobolts and neo's aren't re-zapable .
