Who says there is not valuable skills learned slot racing that have practical uses other places? My wife really did not line the brass lamp finials in the living room. So I took some antique glass and brass door handles and filled the hole with brass tubing leaving a hole for an alignment bolt holding a nut that fit the lamp. I dug out the 500 W Weller and soldered the nut to the brass on the door handle. The Dremel did the tubing cutting and the magnet putty (poster tacking stuff) held the knob during assembly. Looks good, can’t tell it was after market replacement.

Great job Chris!
I concur that skills gleaned from the slot car hobby transfer over into home repair quite well! LOL
Thanks for sharing!

Nice job on the finial Chris.
My story - when my wife and I were finally able to buy a house, there came the time when the copper water pipes needed to be replaced (leaks in basement).
My father in law is from a mid west farm background (if it breaks fix it or do without). Plumbers and electricians were in the family genes so he came by with his tools to help the "city boy" replace the pipes.
He was surprised and pleased at the way I could cut the pipe and solder the joints with a minimum of fuss. I didn't have the heart to tell him I used to cut tubing by rolling it under an old x-acto blade, and soldering with a torch is just using a different tool than a soldering iron.

We gave the Son of a good friend of ours a nice Dremel Set as a wedding present, he loved it. And yeah, we got the wife something else!

My wife came with a Dremel and a router. Didn’t really save me money in the long run.
