Yesterday, I had to stop by an old acquaintance who occasionally races 1/24th by me, but mostly races HO cars.

Here's how he measures the diameter of his tires.

I represented this company "Techmet" (as field sales rep) in the early 90's and they boasted that the unit was accurate within 20 millionths of an inch. It was before its time as clients were not familiar or trusting with non-contact measuring devices.

Chas,

We had a bigger unit at Koford, like the one you show.

IIRC, it was $8K-$12K, 20 years ago.

The much smaller one shown in the top pic ran my friend $7K.

I think that is going a bit overboard for use in slot racing. Plus, in my experience they don't like fuzzy surfaces, or even slightly rough surfaces. Measuring foam tires might not work out as well as expected. We had one at CWM for use in conjunction with the CMM for dimensional inspection of parts during production. It was much faster to set up for simple quality checks then the CMM. We could only check one dimension at a time, but compared to mounting a part on an angle plate and establishing a datum point, it was faster and easier to use.

I thought your friend might have acquired it from work. That he spent $7K for it indicates he's lost his mind! ;)

It's very cool though! I wasn't familiar with laser micrometers.

I hear they are going to include one with every purchase of a new Hudy.  :laugh2:

Wouldn't this be more useful finding the thinnest .010" retro bodies & then putting on the lightest coat of paint.  :laugh2:

In a competitive world, nothing is overboard unless it’s illegal under the rule set
