Larry, I didn't want to clutter up your build thread so I posted here.

I'm no expert, but: The "Histogram" of your photos (light levels from darkest to lightest) are pretty off. Ideally, the light distribution should be somewhat spread out across the range, from one end to the other. Yours is bunched up in a narrow band in the middle. I really think your problem is more due to your camera or camera settings than you lighting. Or both. I fixed it a little, but it's hard when it's that far off.

Sorry to jump in on this thread. I did similar editing with a photo program called "Picture It".

There is an Auto fix tool in the program that solves 90% of photo lighting problems. The results were not optimal in this case so I did it one setting at a time using  the Brightness/Contrast controls along with a Sharpen/Blur tool. You see the results. Picture It has the capability that if you reach the adjustment limits you can re-open the tools and continue from the previous limits.

Mine is an old program but there are several versions available on ebay. I can't say if these same tools are available with the other versions of the program. But I would hope so since they are so useful. I didn't spend much time with this photo. Probably less than a minute. Which allowed other imperfections to surface. It was an experiment from my end.

Just my 2 cents

Hi Larry,
Great workmanship, as always.

Your pictures could be a little brighter, but IMO, your bigger issue is taking the pics from too far away/ not cropping.

I don't think you need to show the end of a piece of piano wire that is going to be trimmed a lot shorter in the future.

Below is a pic I downloaded, cropped and brightened on my bottom of the line, Samsung phone.

Larry,
If you are serious about taking good pics, the below device the late Manta Ray Price gifted the raceway, years ago, is handy.

It came with various color clothes that velcroed into place.

Sort of a PITA.

As you see, the base you use will affect the pic.

Wow, all three of your guys pics look so much better than mine ... thanks! I'm probably going to just blunder forth with this project but will definitely use your info in my next project.

Mike, your comments about cropping make a huge amount of sense so I will see if I can't at least do that much in my next batch.
