Buy lead wire from the raceway you visit to race. They will know what works well.

How much better does it have to be than the Proslot pink lead wire?

The best lead wire in the world won't make your car go faster when there is no track left open to run it on. BUY LOCAL!!

One way to get cost effective lead wire is to go to an electrical supply house with a sample of what you need, they can often sell you multi connector cable that you can strip for a fraction of the cost.
I like to support local shops as much as I can but the sad fact is that most of us have to travel a couple hours to get to a "local" track.

Your go to raceway can mail you the wire you need without having to make a trip. Just call them

If lead wire kept a raceway open, I would not have had no local raceway since August 2010. I choose not to do proxy racing either. When I had a local track, I bought lead wire locally & I've never run out. I like Russ Toy's idea too.

You can find silicone rubber insulated wire on Amazon, but I haven't gotten any myself, so don't know how well it would work for lead wire. My local electronics store sells lots of different wire, but no ultra-flexible silicone rubber insulated wire which is really the best for slot car leads. Places like Mouser and Digikey charge more for silicone rubber wire than the slot car suppliers. I've had TQ 18 gauge and now also have some JK both with clear insulation that I really like. Have also used other slot car brands over the years. For an application where flexibility is critical to performance, I hate to chance using a wire not sold specifically for slot car lead wire. Building a controller is another matter, and I may try the wire from Amazon for that. A friend got some, and it looks nice, but hasn't been tried for lead wire.

An OK friend, who refurbishes motors for resale, buys silicone sheathed wire on Amazon. He doesn't see it as problematic. Amazon probably has more than one source for silicone insulated wire.

The TQ leadwire with clear insulation was my favorite.
