My personal email account has been locked-out by AT&T for a week. I am also locked out from any online help because the AT&T online account is also locked-out.

My questions are:

1. is anyone else here, on Slotblog, using an AT&T email address (this includes, Yahoo, sbcglobal.net, currently.com..ect) locked-out or otherwise hampered from their email account? AT&T says it's happening on their systems and it's their problem.

2. What 3rd party email service is recommended? I'm not against paying for COMPETENT service that knows it's system and how to fix it. Free is better, of course, but pay-to-use isn't an obstacle.

my wife and MIL both use yahoo for email. If anything was going on, I'd have heard about it.

That's not to say your at&t email isn't at issue.

personally, I've been satisfied with gmail for a number of years. It's not perfect, but it seems to work.

it's all going to depend on your needs. is it for personal or business use, etc.

I have a good friend who is locked out of his sbc.global email account. He just opened a gmail account and messaged all of his friends.

I decided years ago to switch to online email. The main reason is that your email address doesn't change every time you change internet providers. And if your computer conks out, you don't lose your email.

I have Outlook, Yahoo and Gmail accounts. Everyone has their own preferences. I like Outlook.

I have pacbell, predecessor to AT&T here.  Mail is through Yahoo and is having no issues.  Logins are through the AT&T servers.

I have been nswanberg@yahoo.com since 1997. The few issues were my own fault. At home it is accessed through ATT, however, I think yahoo is now owned by Verizon.

You can use gmail or Proton mail as free email services.  Earlier in the week, I needed to change my Ameritech password.

OK.... here's what happened and plenty of the blame is on me.

I have had that account since about 2002 and never kept up with the security options that had evolved through the years. What happened was that ATT thought my account was being hacked and put a temporary lock on it. The problem then was I could get to a set of security questions that I answered back when I created the account. I had forgotten those answers and had not written them down or entered into a password manager, the failure of getting through at this point relocks the account... BUT... here's where things became twisted... If after correctly answering the security questions ATT would then send me a code to my email account. Do you see the problem here? Yeah.... Think about this... I can't open the account to access the codes sent to me so I can verify my account...

I now have a brand new account and have lost all emails still in the old accounts. All that stuff is still there but it's not worth the effort and frustration to try....
