Can someone please give me a solid starting point for Can-Am gearing on a King?

Thanks in advance.

You can’t go too far wrong starting at 12/28. Some flatter kings might want an 11 tooth pinion.

I hear you can burn up a motor with that gearing, so be careful of long runs.

As Dennis alluded to, the style of King and power level has a lot to do with the preferred gearing.

Note, I didn't say voltage, as depending on wiring and available amperage, the voltage number might be a misnomer.

What King do you plan to run the car on?

I have yet to burn up a Motor because of gearing it 12/28.  I have raced CR102's on Chicagoland's King, Port Jeff's King, Mark Model World's King, Speedy's Fastlane's King, Speedzone and NESCR's Orange track.   Probably 2 dozen races or more since the Motor was made Legal.

Brian,
Thanks for posting and coming to the race.

I intended to try 11-27, but the car was still 12-28 from the Coupe race and I decided to invest my limited time on cutting out, and mounting a fresh Can Am body for the race.

For those not on FB, here are the results from the two races Brian won;

My phone battery died in the middle of posting.

Here are the 2 races Brian won 11-27 over Howie, running 12-28.

I use 12:27 gear ratio for retro CanAm but I might try 11:27 for running on purple and black lanes. The car is faster using 12:27 gear ratio but the car is slower on purple and black lanes. I race at Piranha Speedway which is a fast king track and have not burned any CR102 motors which are faster than Retro Hawk motors.

John,
Thanks for posting.

In yesterday's race you were in, Duran won running 11-27.

At the weekly Retro race at Port Jeff, last Tuesday, Pat Skeggs won, also running 11-27.

It would seem, on these super-fast tracks, with wide, fast turns, one could take advantage of the higher numeric ratio, across all 8 lanes.

PS - looks like you achieved your dream of 370 laps.

I guess your next dream will be 380 laps. Lol

What about gearing for a small 75 foot track?

You really have to experiment.  I'm not sure if instant punch is something you can take advantage of.

BTW, on our low power(12.2V )GTP races, the winner last Wednesday was geared something like 17-32 or 17-33.
