Past and present raceways on Zee maps has been discussed before on Slotblog.

As I remember the thread, it was somewhat contentious, with the people who knew the secret handshake to add raceways, unwilling to help the people who wanted to add some iconic ones, including Jerry Kulich's (JK Products) first raceway, Fun Island.

OK, I now found the thread and here's the link.

I am researching how to post. It is not intuitive or clear at all.

Chris,

If you figure it out, please list my current raceway address.

I've only been here 8 2/3 years. LOL

If you are on the mobile skin that doesn't show my signature and address, it's

Chicagoland Raceway

Many slot car tracks not listed on that list, for Germany and Denmark try this:

Zeemaps is like a blog, it appears you have to join to have editing privileges like adding or deleting markers (adding/removing/changing items on the map). Then there's an admin that approves changes. It looks like anyone can join, I just did. I haven't made any edits myself, but my wife added some present day raceways that weren't on the map a year or two ago. Use the "Additions" tab at the top of the page and you'll get a drop down menu. "Add Marker-Simple" pops up a box for the information to go with the new map marker. For general instructions, see the "Help" tab at the very bottom of the page.

I am not an admin, don't know any admins, and don't have any admin keys. Like some others that have posted here, I just came across this a few years ago when searching for slot car raceway information. It's a handy though not perfect tool and could use more people posting to it.

Somebody knows how because last spring when the 1st post about this showed up I posted here all the defunct Vermont raceways I knew of and now they're all on the map, also the new raceway in Windsor Vt. is listed.

In that original thread, there was some mumbo jumbo about needing exact addresses to make listings worthwhile.

I think I pointed out why would the exact address really be necessary on a defunct raceway?

Yet, with this need for detail, this popped out at me because I live about 1 1/2 mile away.

I remember the nice snap together track at Oak Ridge Hobbies & Toys.

It was at 75th and Lemont Road.

6115 is a residential address, a few miles away.

Along with Kathy McGuire, it does come up as RPM Toys.

Maybe there is some connection with Oak Ridge Hobbies, but people weren't going to that home in 2004 -2005, when they held Sunday afternoon races.

The bottom line it seems like a non-exact address, like Windsor & Grove, in Berwyn, for Jerry Kulich's (a seminal figure in slot racing) original raceway, Fun Island is of more value historically, than the exact address of the daughter(?) of a person who owned a toy store that had a snap together track for a few years.

BTW, that Zillow valuation is mighty low for a house in that neighborhood, especially with a 2 car garage. LOL

I don't think exact addresses are needed. I checked out the LA area and there are more than a few pins with vague locations. Ray's Checkered Flag Raceway in Inglewood, Ca is "on Manchester" is one example. I highly doubt Ray's was on the corner of Manchester & La Brea as the pin shows. I'll research that soon.

Thanks for pointing that out, Phil.

Apparently the Zee Maps administrators have had a change of heart.

Previous Chicago area raceways are now listed without addresses.

A minor thing, they list Fun Island as being located in my first apartment in Berwyn. Lol

It was actually on Windsor, at Grove, about 1 1/2 miles away.

I marked it with the red dot.

The light blue dot indicates a previous Berwyn raceway, on Stanley Ave., across from the tracks.

I don't recall the name.

The late, great Sano Dave Fiedler, spoke of winning his only major 60's race at that raceway.

I was there only once or twice.

I remember buying a premade wire center section for $2.

A unique feature of the raceway was you had to walk over a bridge to get to the driver's panel.

Anyway, kudos to Zee maps on greatly improving their historical listing.

The Zeemaps system has three entry forms to establish a new marker as well as a help system. The more information that you can give about the marker that you are creating, the more meaningful that marker becomes. It's not like an unstructured blank sheet of paper that you can write what you want where you want.

Zeemaps 1.png

Zeemaps 2.png

Zeemaps 3.png

Zeemaps 4.png

Obviously if little information about a location is known, there is no choice but to fill in what you can and hope that someone else fills in additional information in the future.

People frequently complain that the map contains raceways that have been out of business for some time. They fail to understand the marker color code at the bottom of the map. If you only want to see raceways currently open, then uncheck everything but the GREEN marker.

Likewise for drag strips only, club raceways, etc.

The information on the map is crowd sourced and is only as good and as up to date as the volunteers who donate their time to maintain it. If a raceway closes and fades into the sunset without warning or fanfare, yes, it may be listed as still open because no one was notified otherwise. Likewise raceways that move, have ownership changes, etc.

Here’s a bit of step-by-step.

1. Go to https://www.zeemaps....p?group=2121358.

2. Select Additions from the menu.

3. Select Add Marker Simple or Add Marker Detailed. Put (Closed) in the title at end if closed. Pick the Raceway or Dragstrip, Closed, etc. Get the info right on the first try as it cannot be edited real time once submitted. Add as much detail as comfortable with.

4. Goes to Admin to approve.

5. Link provided to edit later, write it down, no other way to address.

And you are the only one to access with the edit.
