I hope you guys find this as interesting as I did   :D

Lee Gilbert's RTR car spotlighted in the May 1971 issue of Miniature Auto Racing newsletter (MAR):

Gilbert MAR 5-71 (1).jpg

Gilbert MAR 5-71 (2).jpg

And another example of a Gilbert car from the June 1971 MAR:

Gilbert MAR 6-71.jpg

This is a really interesting interview with Lee in the July 1971 MAR.

The large newsletter was scanned on a letter size scanner so you will

have to search a bit to find where to pick up where you left off from the previous page:

Thanks for posting this Rick. I've saved a copy on my PC so I can fit it to my eyes when I'm more awake.  :) In the early 2000s I had several face-to-face conversations with Lee when he came to New Hampshire for a week of scale racing. He was a very interesting down-to-earth guy. .

It's very interesting! Thanks for posting it.

I'm reading, and I pause, and then go back, to see if I had read the price right. $125 is $903.26 in today's money! If they're winning big races then I'm sure Lee had no trouble selling all he could make.

I think to remember a similar article with Lee's wife in a bathtub scrubbing a chassis: "Cleanliness is a Gilbert Thing" I think the headline was :-)

IIRC, Donna was neither Lee's wife or girlfriend.

She was someone hired for the article.

Niels, that was "Donna", not Lee's wife, but a photo studio's model hired by the magazine to enhance the article. I don't think Lee was married at the time the article was published in Car Model. He never again met "Donna."

In reference to DJ.s question "Any idea of the no.5 cars colors?"

THE SMILIN BANANA painted on the nose may be a clue, so maybe yellow is one of the colors?

Philippe would know as he painted it. Is there no replica or remains of this car?

Notice I (almost) avoided the connection with the hot Donna and a smilin banana :laugh2:

Niels, not the car Philippe painted, the above No.5 car.....I#m interested in.

Anyway, blue, white (or yellow) stripe and orange will fit it, I think.

Here's a body I did with the color's you suggest but the orange center fades to red. It's a bit newer style body and air control but I'm showing it for the color scheme:

Lee liked a lot of black on his bodies because he thought they would weight less than if other colors were used. He carried this thought into his scale racing days with eurosports. Ted "Sundance" Coates painted many of his wing bodies & a now-retired man in FL. whose name I forget, did most of his scale bodies,

Rick, the painted body in post # 16 looks like a MAC Porsche. later produced by Parma.

I would start with whoever bought Monty Ohren's slot car stuff after he passed away. When Camen stopped pulling bodies, I read their vac-former & maybe the molds too, were sold to Monty. It's always possible that the Camen Ferrari body was actually pulled by someone else. I don't recall anyone pulling Camen bodies, but I could have missed something.
