I just want to throw out an idea. I understand the premise behind creating the Retro IRRA rules set. The Can-Am Plus class is still there, but I do not hear of any activity in that scratchbuilt anglewinder class.

Therefore, would there be any interest in modifying/adding to the IRRA rules by making two changes:

1) Add the other three classes to the Plus and spec the chassis as anglewinder

2) Spec motors at 60K-75K RPM.

The remainder of the rules governing spec, bodies et al could remain the same. Perhaps some fine tuning is needed; I do not know on that. The classes are a little faster, arguably, than the inline Retro specs and the chassis are different, but the Retro essence is there.

Again. This is just a idea and I do not know how much interest, if any, would be in exploring it.

Rather than re-inventing the wheel, why not add a class to your local program that is an anglewinder? The Cali guys run an anglewinder coupe class that you could clone.

I know that the ORS ran an anglewinder class using the 4002FK motor, but it was always the lowest participation level of all their classes.

Locally we run many classes including a Retro inline and a Retro anglewinder. Very successful for the last 30 plus years. Without going into a long response, we allow any chassis that fits that class to be run. Including ones that are no longer available. Meaning brass anglewnder, etc., or flexi or brass inline.

We don't punish someone for having older stuff... Just saying...

As far as your idea, take it to your local track and propose a class like that. That is how we have lasted so so long because we listen to our people...    :)

Hi Scott,

Can-Am plus is generally only run at premiere events such as RetroPalooza and up until last year at Fall Brawl. I know the GRRR series runs Can-Am Plus on occasion in their series. I think it mainly has not grown beyond the frequency of running because of the amount of maintenance the other four classes currently take for the average racer. Straightening chassis, bodies, tires, and other wear and tear items. I personally enjoy running the class and look forward to running a couple times a year.

The only IRRA anglewinder class is RetroPro which the rules are identical to the SCRRA. This class uses the mini Pro Slot motor with an X12 arm. Very fast and most are running at Piranha in the 3.0 range with a few in the 2.9s.  Going off memory, I don't believe we have run RetroPro in the east for two years now for one reason or another.

While I don't see a need to add additional classes to the IRRA banner at this time there is nothing saying you can't start something locally. Whatever works to get racers in the doors to help keep raceways open is a win.

Dominic,

Is RetroPro the same as the Retro with anglewinder? I was trying to find out more. I may have suggested something that already exists.

If so, mea culpa to everyone.

If you look under the SCCRA forum in one of their quarterly events, such as the Checkpoint Cup, you will see some the anglewinders they run.

Here is a pic of one of the cars and body they use.

FYI... the IRRA only has a rule set for Can-Am Plus which is basically a regular inline Can-Am with greatly relaxed body and chassis rules. I believe a long time ago the IRRA did have a Retro Anglewinder (RetroPro?) set of rules but they were dropped, maybe ten years ago or more.

SoCal's SCRRA does have a RetroPro anglewinder class which they do run from time to time, especially at their bigger races.

SCRRA does run two classes of anglewinders at the bigger events like todays opening of the 2023 Checkpoint. First, the AW Coupes on the flat track using TSR and RH motors. Then, later in the day (right about now actually), the AW RetroPro class runs on the King track. Two different tracks and two waaaay different AW classes.

Hope that helps a bit.
