I re-assembled a couple of my Group 12 chassis cars from 1969-1970.  The McLaren Mk6 GT is built to Group 12 specifications, and the Chapparal 2G is powered with a mild wind Mura A-can open motor.

The cars worked well on Oakland Speedway's high-banked track.  They were great fun to drive.  The Oakland Speedway track also had a series of "S curves."  I always thought the Group 12 chassis worked better than the Group 20 chassis on these curves.  As Eric said, "less mass."

Chaparral 2G (Lancer body)) and a McLaren Mk6GT (Dynamic body).  Both bodies are butyrate plastic.

Great old cars Rod! I ran that McLaren coupe on my weekly Phase III race cars at Modelville Hobby in the early '70s. We ran Dynamic, Kirby, & a few Lancer bodies.

did Champion change the pans on the GP20 at some point in time? I seem to recall different pans on a GP20(?)....

I remember full width pans and material under the front axle.

I think this was the first generation of chassis before it evolved into the Gr. 20 that everyone is familiar with

Very nice, do you know the numbers of those single hole dual shaft Champion motors?

Just picked a couple up but the numbers are worn off the tags and I stupidly sold my Champion catalog last week  :dash2:

Should have just kept it but where do you draw the line on this stuff, soon I'll be living in a van down by the river  :shok:

I just picked up this pair, for a good price. One new in the bag one used with a name engraved.

Are these group 12's?

Great cars Rodney. That 2G has got me motivated to get back to work on mine soon. Thanks for sharing them.   :victory:

Martin, PdL had a great thread on Champion Group cars but unfortunately he's deleted all the photos. I was

going to post a link to it but why bother.    :unknw:

Thanks Rodney and Rick.  Interesting difference between the 2 chassis you show. Oval hole (just ahead of the motor) by Champion. Square hole is made by who?

Made in Japan I assume and maybe sold by many, Riggen, Mura etc.?

I got one of the oval holed Champions in a REHCO Grp. 20 kit in 1970. It had Champion blind hole fronts & rears, a Mura 1-hole A-can, a Mura arm, & a clear Ferrari 612 body. I forget what the guide & gear was, maybe Jet & Cobra. I think the square hole version came later. Maybe the NCC needed more Group 20 chassis once the Champions were gone. Both were probably made by AYK, but t don't know who funded the square hole version. The Champion version was an ugly handling chassis. Morrissey later wrote a Car Model setup article, but I wasn't still running it then.

Just wondering how the high rear wing on the Chapparal is supported and kept in place? If you raced this car competitively, how often did the wing come away when the car was involved in an accident?

Rod.

Rod, this one has styrene wing struts glued to the wing and the body.  At a vintage race in South San Fransisco, a turn marshal knocked the styrene strut mounted wing off while turn marshalling another car.

With "Q-tip" wing struts, I have had no problems with wing/strut damage.

I am now mounting the wing struts to the chassis.
