What a great Saturday for racing!
We gathered at The Doghouse for our monthly race, this time choosing to do battle with our Retro Can-Ams --- one of my personal favorite classes. We had a great turnout, too, with seven drivers...
(From L to R: Allen Evans, David Erickson, Dr. Marty Cwiakala, Dan Parker, Eric Prevost (seated), Richard Sylvester, and your humble scribe, Jim Beasley)
We had a blast, as we all enjoy running retro classes, whether it's Can-Ams or F1s. Maybe we'll pull out the F1 class for a future race, but that's another story for another day.
The cars...
Front row: David, Eric, and Dan
Back row: Marty, Jim, Allen, Richard
Some of the drivers were short on time on this particular day, which was unfortunate, as the racing was a blast. Due to the time constraints, we ran two races instead of three, giving each of the seven drivers five minutes per lane. The first race was a bit slower than the second, as the track was still cold (especially cold for South Carolina), the cars were cold, and so were our trigger fingers. So, we moved on to the second round, which was much faster.
Unfortunately, Eric ran out of time and had to make an early exit after only running the first heat and a part of the second. But simultaneously, David developed car issues. So, he used the polka-dotted speedster for the rest of the race. (FYI, the car is actually Dan's backup that he had loaned to Eric, who is fairly new with us and doesn't have a Can-Am of his own yet.) David drove it well.
Also, your humble scribe experienced some motor issues toward the end of the first race, prompting a change to my tuning-fork backup in the toolbox. And what a difference! Smooth and fast --- just like I intended when I built it.
The second full race came down to the final heat, with Marty and me battling to overtake Richard's final total. We ran as hard as we could, and Marty and I fought to the very last lap...
So, another great Saturday of racing is behind us. We now look ahead to Saturday, March 18, when we plan to run our JK Indy cars. These things are always a lot of fun --- and they're extremely fast and agile. We expect to post results after.
Until then, enjoy the racing and support your local raceway.
