The engineering needed to handle all of the complexities of life at sea is very humbling knowing this was all done without computers or any modern technology.

If any of you are near Charleston, MA. you should stop and see the USS Constitution. It's an amazing ship. Standing along side it on the quay it looks enormous. Once on board you are able to see everything in perspective, and it doesn't seem as large as you would expect, considering the number of crew it used to take when she was at war. It's the oldest commissioned ship in the Navy.
Both the USS Constitution and HMS Victory are considered ships of the line. They got the name due to the type of battle tactics they use.
The ships of each country formed a line, and fired apon each other as they passed in opposite directions.

That's Charlestown, I've seen it up close, but never actually on it. One ship I have been on is the Mayflower II docked at Plymouth. MA in the summers.

While not as grand, there is an 1877 sailing ship in Galveston, TX called the " Elyssa". It was a trade/immigration ship and brought many immigrants here to the US southern shore. It is still in use for training voyages, day trips and "Tall Ship" exhibition voyages. There is a museum right next to it explaining the purpose, usage and hardships of the time period. Just up the block is a fantastic dinner at Fisherman's Wharf where you can sit out over the water and enjoy fine fresh seafood. Among other things to see and visit in Galveston Historic Seaport.

Thanks for posting that. A beautiful ship, and as the literature says, a barque. Fore and main masts square rigged, the mizzen with a gaff rigged spanker. There is something about a tall ship that tugs at my heartstrings. Probably because there were some seamen in my family's far distant past.
