I built this slot car around a very used Russkit brand McLaren Elva Mk2 body.

The nicely painted body was cleaned and repaired.  Missing detail parts were replaced.  Exhaust pipes and a roll bar were made of aluminum tube.  A front spoiler was added.  The interior had a cutout for an inline motor chassis.  The interior cutout was patched.  I wanted the car to have a full interior, so it was decided a sidewinder chassis was the way to go.

A sidewinder magnesium chassis for a 16D motor was found.  The chassis was cleaned up, and additional holes were drilled for body mounts and relocated cross brace screws.  Aluminum body mounts were added.  The drop arm was re-bent/reinforced for the Cox quick-change guide.  A Dynamic rewound 16D motor powers the car.  Gears (Weldun?) were found that meshed perfectly in the non-adjustable chassis.  Silicon rear tires and set screw front wheels were found in the parts bin.

The car is really light and weighs in at only 3.8 ounces.  Some weight may need to be added to the front of the chassis to balance out the car.  Time for a track test.

Roll bar is 1/16" aluminum tube

I wanted to use a full interior, so a sidewinder chassis was chosen.  Th magnesium chassis has a short 3 5/8" wheelbase

The motor is a Dynamic 16D rewind

Good looking save Rodney! I don't recognize the chassis, but the body mounts are Champion, first used on their 36D chassis.

Great project Rod, and you really did a save on that body!

I don't recognize the chassis either, but not that many companies made magnesium chassis - any idea what it could be? Maybe homemade, the shape doesn't ring a bell.

Pretty sure those blue spur gears are by Speedway. Not by Weldun in any case.

Looking forward to the road test!

The chassis looks like a Kemtron to me, especially the drop arm, my 67 Technical Journal lists a handful of magnesium sidewinders for various motors including the 16d but no pics of any of them (there are 34 Kemtrons listed) I have been able to find some other's on line, but NOT for the 16d, the ones for other motors look awfully similar

Thanks everyone.  The McLaren handles great.  The car is neutral and when more power is supplied out of the turns the tail will slightly drift out.  The motor has quick acceleration and great brakes.  Surprisingly, no additional weight was needed to balance out the car's handling.
