Were/are the Tyco HO cars any good compared to Aurora AFX or Thunderjet cars?

Very much depends on which generation of Tyco cars you're talking about!

The original series of Tyco cars, with worm gear drive, were slower than the Thunderjets. Then in the late 60s Tyco came out with the Tycopro cars, which revolutionized the industry - they were a lot faster than the contemporary Aurora cars (not sure if there were AF/X cars already), but from what I read, the hopped up Aurora cars still won more races because they were better handling.

We'd need somebody who ran them at the time to really compare.

Back in the day we found the Tyco Pro  not so well suited to HOPRA racing. The issues with them were addressed when Riggen came out with their car. It was far better and very raceworthy with a few simple upgrades and preparation. This is a modern version of the Riggen car.

I raced in the late 60s and the early 70s . When Tycopro cars hit the scene they blew away the thunderjets but AURORA introduced AFX and the race was on . Then AURORA in 1972 added the Superll and that started the war on speed and design . Riggen and Dynabrute Followed along with a lot of after market speed parts added a lot to the hobby back then . You couldnt wait for the new Autoworld catalog to see what was new . Here is my Tycopro collection .

My take on it back then was that Tycopro had a lot of potential when they came out in '70. You could hear the potential in the high pitched sound of the motors, but they didn't handle that well. AFX came out in '71 and while they weren't quite as fast in the straightaways, they were easier to work on and modify to make faster.  Riggen was faster in the straights than AFX or Tycopro, but even Riggen lacked a little in the handling compartment, although they handled better than Tycopros. My friends and I liked the Riggen cars mostly for drag racing, where they would blow the others away.
