Back in 2018 I started building a drag slot car for a magazine article in issue #9 (which never got produced). But I never stopped working on that car and today made some great advances on the detailing and bare metal foil trim on the body.
It all started in January 1971 when I fell in love with a drawing penned by Pappy Lemmons and painted by Jake Thompson on the cover of Hot Rod Cartoons magazine.
That image is this one...
You see, at the time George Lemmons was driving a 1965 Barracuda daily and I bet, while washing the car inside and out, came up with the idea for the Funny Car he called "Simi Sled". That was because he lived in Simi Valley CA. Anyway, I loved the idea so much that I built a static model of it in the mid 80's.
Car won a few awards at model car shows, but I really wanted to build a slot version someday.... so to that end.
I started in 2018 constructing a chassis (rather simple things they are) with a place holder motor. The reason is, that drag slots is divided up into classes based on the motor. So any 16D will fit that bracket.
This one features Cox front wheels and ProTrack rears which need new rubber. The inserts fit perfectly with no grinding.
You will notice that this time I actually filled in the "rear" wheel opening to replicated the stock Barracuda wheel wells like the drawing.
Interior is built up on top of the original "Hemi under glass" wheel stander that the body is based on, but reversed of course while leaving room to clear the motor.
Body with 3 coats of clear over the yellow lacquer gives a smooth layer to lay down the bare metal foil trim which I applied today.
All that will be buried under more coats of clear before the decals applied allowing wet sanding of the Tamiya clear to ensure every thing is smooth.
Now, with the static model I vacuum formed the window glass for added realism. But, with this car I think I'll use the stock back glass for strength in case a track uses a catchers mitt to stop the thing past the finish line.
Fun project huh?
