Here is a 1/24 1964 Chaparral 2 slot car I just completed. Hap Sharp drove Chaparral 2 car number 67 in 1964. Note the exhaust collectors on this early Chaparral.

The resin body is from a VSR brand kit.  The body was smoothed out a little underneath and painted with Tamiya white and Testers brown paints. The exhaust pipes are made up of resin tube pieces glued to paint brush ferrules. The intake pipes are Russkit Porsche items glued together to make eight pipes. The interior card is made of scrap plastic that features a hump to clear the motor. The driver figure is Cox brand, and the roll bar is made of aluminum rod.

The brass end-bell side motor bracket, forward chassis tubes, and axle tube are from someone's unfinished project.  A drop arm and body mounts were added to this assembly. The motor can is soldered to the motor U-bracket.  Side chassis tubes were added to the motor U-bracket. For armature access, the U-bracket and tubes slide rearward, and the motor can/front chassis structure slides forward  A brace was added to the motor U-bracket.The motor has a 6-volt armature and sounds pretty strong on the power supply.

Rick told me that Revell makes wheel inserts that resemble the ones used on early Chapparals, so Revell wheels and inserts are used. Tires are urethane. The car weighs in at 6.1 ounces.

Saw this kit on eBay and thought it looked a little rough.  You did a great job of bringing it to life.

Rick told me that Revell makes wheel inserts that resemble the ones used on early Chaparrals, so Revell wheels and inserts are used.

Revell wheel inserts from the Lotus F1 kit:

Rodney's version of the Chaparral with wobbly-web wheels:

From Wikipedia on the "Wobbly-web" wheel:

The best-known example of the wobbly-web wheel was that used by Lotus for their racing cars of the late 1950s and early 1960s. These wheels first appeared on the Formula 2 Lotus Twelve of 1957. A similar wheel was used by Vanwall from 1958.

The wheel's design was, in typical Lotus fashion, intended to achieve the lightest possible weight. This is particularly important for wheels, as they are unsprung weight and the cars intended to carry them were extremely lightweight.

I think they are a very cool look on the early Chaparral.

Nice car Rodney!   :)

Thanks again Rick.  I also used your Chaparral build as a reference.  Thanks Chris.  The body did require a bit of work to finish.
