This is the Chaparral 2D that raced at Daytona in 1966 and sold as both a model kit and a slot car.
I purchased the model kit version a long time back and looking over the parts realized that it also was sold as a slot car kit.
I think Electric Dreams sold the chassis which I bought and Professor Motor sold the chassis mounting bit with the necessary screw mounts.

I started the project in 2016 and have been working on it off and on since then.

One of the chrome stacks was broken and missing since this is an old kit, even unbuilt it lasted the years since 1966 fairly well.

But needed a new stack so I used some of my parts box flared tubes to improve the scale look.

I also cut open the rear end and replaced the plastic mesh with a nice screen.

Finished chassis....

Finished stacks.

As of today, the body is painted white and clear coated with 5 coats of Tamiya clear.

It's also been decaled with the kit decals, interior done and mounted on the chassis and I am installing the window glass.
Final pictures soon....

Getting so close I can almost taste this one.   :)

I always lusted after this one. It was on the self at the commercial track I went to when I was a teenager.

You are bringing back memories.

You added really nice details BTW :good:

FYI the box art was different in the U.K. but still the same kit by Monogram.  You want to see? I know you are a box artist  :)

Jarius, I too have been working on that same model for a couple of years and while a simple kit, it is not an easy one. Not being a great modeler, I have been struggling with just gluing in the front headlights cleanly.

Regarding your build, the save on the velo stacks is pretty awesome but what you did with the screen at the back end is modeling poetry!

Its a much bigger box, and that's what I remember on that ouch of reach self.

It is a pic of the built model as you can see.

As a side note, the mount kit has been out of stock (at Prof Motor) for a couple of years now and probably won't be coming back. Since I need it myself, I am going to 3D print one and will post it up on Shapeways incase anybody else needs it. Jarius, your detailed close up pic of this part will help a lot so thank you!

Hey Jairus -- Kind of too late, but the later issue of the Monogram 2D kit, Monogram 85-2850 (the one with the driver figure) has the correct decals for Daytona, which are not the same as previous issues, and were not the same on each side.  As a cheaper alternative, Indycals has them for $7.00

Today I took some more "final" pictures.  Although thus far I have not installed the headlights or rear view mirror in to the inside of the body.
Nor have I glued the interior to the body.  It's so far just sitting in place.

Good enough for now.  Still have a few details to take care of.
Oh, and the wing still moves around on the pivot points since I got rid of the pendulum workings missing some of the parts being that this was a model kit and not the proper slot car.

I did the same thing. I picked up an incomplete model kit for pocket change at a swap meet, and mounted it on a cobbled-up home made pan chassis. After this picture was taken, I used a set of Cox Chaparral wheels, which completed the look.

Now that I have seen how much it adds, I'm going to go back and add the black "gasketing" around the windows and headlight covers. It adds so much. Nice touch, Jairus.

Well, it's easier to paint the black line before installing the glass, but good luck.
I also painted the inside of the cabin flat black and drew door and panel lines in with a technical pen.
Had a bit of a problem getting the paint smooth on the wing so after a lot of wet sanding I hogged a nice coat of white on the top surface.
Getting close!

Wing installed and took some finished pictures.  Enjoy.

2v2eY6UsCxubMLY.jpg

This pic shows that I added two more screws to the body mount piece.  The reason was, because it was very hard to install the body if the mount was glued to the interior.  Thus the screws.

2v2eY6U8FxubMLY.jpg

But... while taking this picture I realized one mistake... no exhaust pipes!  Crap.... back to the bench.

The clear pieces are all glued on with latex canopy adhesive on mine, so I hope the parts will come off. There are so many details that, after seeing your model, I now want to upgrade. Truth be told, none of my models are ever completely finished.

Tedious would be a understatement of the effort it must have taken to achieve the accuracy of the rear meshing.
Big fan of it and all of the variants.

Thank you Mark!

But it's just modeling and I have been doing that for 50 years at least.

Ok, even though I might have been doing it that long, I never got to the same level. Build on!!!
Anyone notice the shared DNA between the models?

Since I was about eight, so that would make 65 years. By that age my entire neighborhood was car crazy. And plastic models were all we had. Thank God every 5 and dime, bodega, variety store, and toy store sold the model kits. We didn't care if it was 1/24th, 1/25th, or 1/32nd. All we needed was a picture in a car magazine and the next project was under way.

Oddly, for a while the local Army-Navy surplus store had the largest supply of kits. Monogram, being local, would donate kits, I suppose to get the tax write-off. The rumor was that they were factory seconds, with some minor defects. Maybe, but I was tickled to get a model kit for 50 cents.

All us wee lads got magazine subscriptions from relatives for birthdays, and it was always a scramble to make sure each of us got a different publication.

("What do you want for your birthday, Davey?") Model Car Science, of course.

If anyone is interested in converting the Monogram model to the later season specification, here is a pic from the Petroleum Museum, Midland, TX.

That's thirty minutes away. I'll be there in ten.
