Sad news that long-time Houston-area racer and recent shop owner (Coolman's Slot Car Track) Earl Quillen passed away last week. He had been in ill health as far as I'm aware at least since mid-March.

 

A number of still-active racers in this part of the world raced with Earl when we were teenagers at Lloyd Drewes's shop, Broadway Hobbies, back in the 60's and early 70's. Earl established and ran Coolman's Slot Car Track in South Houston until a couple of years ago. 

 

He was a genuinely nice guy, and will be missed.

Sad news indeed. I did race with Earl way back when at Broadway Hobbies in Houston and another track in Pasadena (run by Tom Ugron, Orange American track).

 

R.I.P., Earl... hold a spot for us all at the driver's panel up there.

Coolman's Slot Car Track a few years ago, with Earl supervising a good cleaning. Can't tell for sure but I believe that's his good friend David Etheridge with the spray bottle at left.
