Stock Cars on the King – 7/18/23
The MVH Tuesday night retro series made its annual trip to the King to run the Retro Stock Car class. Seven drivers participated, racing in the 4-on/3-off format, running the outside four lanes then moving to the inside four for a total of 14 heats.
Stock Cars in Tech:
In a relatively clean race, John Weaver took the early lead while Bob “Woody” Hazelwood and Rob Hayes gave chase. By the change to the inside lanes, Weaver’s 153 lap total was good for a four-lap lead over Woody. Rob was another two laps back with 147, while Rolly Lapierre Jr. and Dave Panich were tied for 4th with 144 laps each. Joe Yates and Richard Payne closed out the field.
Positions stayed pretty much the same in the second half of the race. However, Rob closed the gap to Woody, who thought he had a comfortable lead and wasn’t pushing, and eventually squeezed by him to take second place by a single track section. In the meantime, John cruised to victory with a thirteen lap cushion. Rolly outdrove Dave on the inside lanes to claim fourth place by one lap.
The fastest lap time of the evening went to Weaver who’s 4.499 on blue was a tenth and a half faster than second fastest racer Rob. The last time we ran Stock Cars on the King, Weaver also won the race but with a fastest time of 4.718, a full 2/10th slower than his best time in this race.
Finishing order, laps completed, best-lap time and best-lap lane:
1) John Weaver 307/27 4.499 BL
2) Rob Hayes 294/4 4.657 BL
3) Woody Hazelwood 294/3 4.718 GN
