After a couple of years, I finally completed this Porsche 804 F1 slot car.  It is a model of Dan Gurney's French GP winner.  The real car is powered with a 1.5 liter flat 8 engine.

Rick told me about an article by Dick Dobson in the June 1964 Model Car Science that inspired this slot car build.  Dick built a 1/32nd scale Porsche F1 bodied (Auto Hobbies body I think) slot car.  Rick found a 1/24th scale Auto Hobbies Porsche body for me.  So, Rick and I discussed building a scaled-up 1/24th scale version of the Dobson car.

Rick said, "I've been thinking about your idea to build a 1/24th scale version of that cool 1/32nd scale magazine car.
You were thinking of a larger motor for it, and this 6 volt Aristocraft motor shown with a Pittman 196 from the 1/32nd magazine car came to mind".

Rick supplied the Aristocraft motor and the rest of the components for the car.  Thanks again, Rick.

The Auto Hobbies Porsche fiberglass body was short on one side.  I worked on repairing the body and wanted the body to still look like a factory-finished Auto Hobbies body, so the body was not overly refinished.  The intake area of the engine cover was poorly molded.  I cut out the intake area and installed some fine mesh screen.  Some silver Tamiya lacquer paint was fogged in.  The windscreen is from a well-used Shark vacuform body.

The real car has two long and two short exhaust pipes.  I went with two pipes.

The chassis is based on a proven design found in the January 1967 Model Car & Racing article by David Ross.

Russkit wheels and Classic brand bevel gears are used.  Rear tires are urethane.  The guide is Revell.

Time to try out the car.

That looks great Rod. Very curious to see how this one runs.

One of the early motor review articles showed the Aristocraft as having the highest RPM of any of these motors, about 35K I think... and if I know Rick, I'm sure he rezapped it before sending it to you!

I was getting a little worried.

It's been almost a week since you've built a new car  :laugh2:

I like the suspension arms and the windshield repurpose.

I see you've added bearings out back.

I have a feeling this one may be pretty quick around the track.

I also like the addition of the suspension detail. Cars of this era were as much models as they were slot cars. I wish we could start a period correct class, sticking to only the bodies appropriate for the era, and build techniques used during the 1964/65 time slot.

I know that getting motors identical to the ones used would be the breaking point. Someone, (probably me) would have to do a search to find a supplier for open frame motors. Right now, I would say it's unlikely.

Thanks everyone.  Here is Rick's wonderful Porsche build with a vacuform body.  The Revell wheel inserts are nice.  I think a Kemtron chassis kit with swivel front end was used.  I added the fresh tires to the car.  Nice driving car.

Wonderful, wonderful.

Are you guys going to have a Porsche-off?

Yep, that's a Kemtron monotube chassis, one of my favorites - they made those for at least 3 or 4 motors.

One of my first "vintage" builds used the monotube chassis with a Ram XL500... (it was originally pivoting on the front end, but over time, I braced that part...)

Great looking car Rodney. The "Korrect" font on the number 30 decals really make "the look". Fiberglass bodied cars are so cool.   :sun_bespectacled:

I bet Dan Gurney would have liked it too.........

Guys, couple of weeks ago went to the Peterson, and had a beautiful display of this car.Lots of factory prototypes I have never seen.Back in the early days ,me and Al ran this body a lot w/196 Pittman of course body mounts were 1 piece of masking tape (early floppies) marshalls would hate these cars, but they were sooo slow,we never came off.Think I stole this idea from Howie. In my life Ive had a 62B,64C,a 914 and today the o3 Boxster excuse me while I turn up the Bose and the electric windows!....................................................Marty P surfs up..............

Amazingly, the fastest lap times with the two Porsches were identical.  Rick's Pittman DC70 powered Porsche is really fast down the straights and my Porsche was able to carry more speed in the turns.  I asked Rick about the Pittman motor, and he said it is stock.  Rick's magic touch.

Both cars are fun and easy to drive.  Neutral handling with both cars.
