[Leroy Sanders]

Palouse Slots hosted their 6^th race of the summer series this last Saturday the 26^th of August. We had 10 racers on the roster at race time but lost one due to not feeling well. We raced four classis Stock car, F-1, Can-Am and Coupe. The talk of the day was to stop Robert Clements of Moscow from repeating a sweep of all four classes as he did the previous month.

 

First class up is Stock car on the red track. Tom Sunday from Wenatchee/ Race masters putting the hammer down to take first place with 141 laps putting an end to Robert Clements winning streak. Robert finished 2^nd with 137 followed by another Race Masters/ Wenatchee racer John Wimett in 3^rd with 133. Rounding out 4^th place is track owners Leroy Sander’s grandson Bradyn Arndt from Palouse with 121.

 

Next class up is F-1 on Ken’s track. Robert Clements of Moscow, not to be distracted from his loss came back with the 1^st place win with 117 laps followed by the Race master’s John Wimett in 2^nd with 112 and Tom Sunday 3^rd with 111. Track owner Leroy Sanders in 4^th with 110.

 

It was time to break for Lunch with 1/2 -pound burgers baked beans, Cole slaw, chips and Cake and Ice cream for dessert.

 

Can-Am on the red track after lunch. With everyone in a food coma will the dynamics change.  The results will answer that. No, Robert Clements from Moscow crushed the field with 144 laps to take first and Race master’s Crew of John Wimett in second with 135 and Tom Sunday in 3^rd with 131. Tom Brown from Spokane who took a year off from racing in 4^th with 130.

 

Last class of the day Coupe on Ken’s track. Robert Clements and Paul Dwyer from Spokane fought hard for this race, battling lap for lap. Robert Clements from Moscow was able to take first with 117 laps by only a few feet putting Paul Dwyer of Spokane in 2^nd place with 117 and once again Race masters crew John Wimett in 3^rd with 112 and Tom Sunday 4^th with 111.

 

Palouse Slots would like to thank all the racers it was a fun time. Next months race date is Saturday September 30^th. Hope to see you.

Love the model of the Chaparral 2H.

 

A very interesting car.  Aerodynamic and narrow it was designed to be very slippery.  After Jim Hall had a crash and couldn't drive it John Surtees was put in hte car.  At that time there was NO clear aero bubble for the driver.  Only a TINY rectangular windshield and the side windows.  Surtees complained bitterly and Hall relented with the clear aero bubble to improve visibillity.  The car was not successful and ultimately had a huge rear spoiler and wing installed on it changing the concept from low-drag to high downforce.  It didn't seem to help.

 

If the model's clear spoiler were painted aluminum it would be an accurate representation of one version as was raced.

 

Just about anything went in the original CanAm series.

The Chaparral 2H shown is a Dillworth body designed to fit D3 Retro chassis so it is wider and shorter than the original race car.

 

When Jim Hall modified the 2H so John Surtees could see out, he cut a hole in bubble and had to raised the seating platform which threw center of gravity way off.

I replaced Surtees in this version with Mike Spence (helmet) who drove the 2F for Jim Hall.  With more development and the 427 big block this could have 

 

 

The Lancer version of 2H shows the longer/narrower scale of the real race car.
