Just noticed that one (1) type has extra tabs(?) behind the pickup shoe/brush retainer plate.(1st photo)
I've had these since we had to use squirrels in a cage hooked up to a generator to power the track and I NEVER noticed the difference until tonight!!!!
Another thing, while it's on what's left of my mind is, I can't remember what a quadlam armature looks like. I do remember disembowling a few X- celarators. I would guess that quad would imply that it had four (4) laminations to the arm. Also, I can tell that I tried multiple segment and 🤔 the results resembled a quadrilateral more than a armature (second photo). Any one have a quad lam to post?
And lastly, gray, green and, red. I'll take a wild guess and say that the colours go from oldest to older, and then, old . I'm sure someone will have the answers to these and other questions.

1.) I have no idea what the additional tabs are for.

2.) Quadralam armatures do have 4 lamination plates. They first appeared on the Aurora "Super II", and later on the "X-celerators".

3.) Green = "mean green" or early AFX armature, red = "red devil" (Aurora "Tuff Ones") or AFX Magnatraction, gray = ???

Luckily for you there's a great resource for all things HO scale right here in Syracuse. Take a trip to Slot Car Central on Teall Ave and visit with Bob Molta. He'll be able to answer any questions you might have.

LoL 😂 I know Bob very well. He's even prived me too the location of the private door and the special nock! Hasn't been around much, busy with another hobby of his. Only problem going there is, I almost empty my deep pockets of $$$ but, there overflowing with things I can't live without when I leave. I take it you've been there? Did he show you the tractor trailers that are also filled?

I've been to his store many times and bought some vintage HO and 1/24 scale stuff from him. Unfortunately he wont sell me any of his Riggen HO cars or NOS parts.  :nea:

I haven't seen the inside of the trailers, but I believe the contents are part of the NOS stock that he bought from REH a few years ago. He did show me Bob Haines personal Hoffman box.  :D

I think the extra tabs on the slimline chassis were produced in later production, but I'm not sure what purpose they had other than maybe giving a little added strength.
