So what is up with this new Red Fox guide, and is it .5 sec faster than anything in the world?
What does it look like?

Cahoza has had the same guide out for six months + – I have been using them and like them.
From what I hear the guide length on the RF has to be shortened to be legal for IRRA Retro racing.

No, they didn't.
Cahoza came out with a reasonable facsimile of the old red Fox guide.
It's nowhere like the new one.

You should test it and let us know.
Test it?
I can't do that until I have at least seen one.

If it is 1/2 second faster on a group 7 car on the Port Jeff King track, then it is ballistic.

Here is the Cahoza -- you have to look closely to observe the curvature.
In use, about the front 3/16" and rear 1/8" show contact after a full race -- sorry, I just cleaned my cars after Saturday's races or I could have shown it. And, again, it is within IRRA legal length -- other types of racing don't seem to have that guideline. Just to compare.

i have some old redfox guide flags more of the standard thing (no side profile cut out).. what I noticed with the red fox guides is the front and rear are never tapered vs say the HP tapered guide flags.. I get that having less side profile creates less friction but what about not having the front and rear tapered at all? Not as big of an issue? Is there actually a reason you wouldn't want the front and rear tapered?

hey Mike,,, you could do that to ur weighted guide by cutting a half moon in the middle of the giude b4 bonding in the weight

I already made a couple like that, 5 or 6 months ago, for an East Coast racer.
I left the recessed material thicker so machining the slot dead center wasn't so critical.
He never asked me to do more so it must not of been anything special.
I doubt the recessed sides and "less friction" is doing anything.
Slick 7 had or still might have that guide with the recessed circles in the blades. I don't remember them taking over slot racing.
I tried less blade friction on guides 20-25 years ago, using various techniques.
I could never see any difference.
Within the last 3 or 4 years , I cut out the whole middle, and again didn't see any lap time improvement.
It may of been slower(blade flex??).
If there is an advantage with the new Red Fox guide, I believe it has more to do with the different post position.

Hi Mike,
What -- if any - is the advantage of the different post position, in your opinion?

I made one of my own, 2 or 3 years ago, using a stock guide.
The car definitely had a different feel.
I didn't kill myself testing it because I only have so much time, and I knew if it was exceptional, I couldn't sell something this cobbled together and even if I felt it was raceable, I couldn't keep up with orders.
I think it would simulate a longer guide lead and might be real valuable on a stock car.
FWIW, at the race you were at this past Saturday, Pat Skeggs ran a stock one in Can Am and finished 3rd.
You can ask him what differences he felt.
The bottom line is you have to buy 5 or 6 dozen and try them out. Lol

If Pat ran a stock one then are we going to be allowed to run them at full length?
Or should we shorten up the nose a little bit?

Thanks Danny, had a good time and it was good to see all of y'all too.
I ask it that way to see what anyone said about cutting it with it already being short in the rear end.

When I referred to stock, I was alluding to it being non-weighted.
Sorry for the confusion.

It comes to mind that it may be time for the IRRA to rethink the guide flag rules. and allow the longer flags that are in production to be run at there stock size.
I know HP JK and now Red Fox have production guides that are over current limits by just a bit, and there may be others.
Posted 28 September 2023 - 09:35 AM
On the other hand The IRRA could just say you can not alter the length of the production guide flag thereby outlawing the new long guides.
It seems to me that checking the cars at race events would be easier with either minor change to the rules.

I think its just an outdated rule. ISRA has a max length of 28.5 mm (1.122 in). We don't need to go that far, but bumping it up from 1.060 to 1.080 to accommodate these guides isn't going to set the world on fire. Less work for both racers and tech directors.

Not saying you are not correct, but where do the governing bodies stop with updating rules for manufacturers that "push" the rules? This has happened all through out slot car racing for years and now we are a select few people who race.
