Coupes on the King – 4/18/23

tech.jpg

The third round of the MVH Coupe Series saw GT Coupes head to the King this week. Six racers competed in the 4-on/2-off format, running the outside four lanes then moving to the inside four. Marshals worked the lead-on and the deadman. Other than an occasional car off the track under the bridge, it seemed to work.

Late in practice, Bob Hazelwood, aka “Woody”, while trying to get his car to hook up, managed to strip a wheel set screw, so John Weaver loaned him a backup car. It also seemed to work.

John Weaver, as usual, jumped into the early lead, logging 173 laps by the move to the inside. Running solidly in second place, Woody tried to keep pace, but ended the first half trailing by 6 laps. Dave Panich wasn’t as fast as Woody but was opening a lead over Peter Lentros when his motor went south at the beginning of his fourth heat. Changing to a somewhat slower backup car, he made it to the changeover with 161 laps, good for a one lap lead over Peter Lentros in a tight race for third place. Meanwhile, Richard Payne’s 154 lap total was one lap better than Bobby Blanchette’s 153 lap effort in another tight race, for fifth place in this instance.

The second half saw some excitement as a couple of cars hit the floor or various other impediments. A collision between Bobby and Dave resulted in a very bent wheel for Bobby (who also had to resort to a backup car) while Dave’s car left the main straight and disappeared between the deadman and the straight. Woody, who was marshalling the deadman, fought off the dust bunnies to retrieve Dave’s mostly intact Coupe.

When the dust settled (literally), John took the win with a nine-lap margin over Woody. Pete got around Dave to take the final podium position by three laps and Richard opened up a slight gap over Bobby to take fifth.

The fastest lap of the race went to John who managed a 4.054 on orange while Woody was second fastest with a 4.117 on yellow.
