The Strombecker 1/32 cars were far from my favourite as a kid, as, at the time there were far better performing cars,.........as time has gone by, I have come to appreciate the moulding of some of their bodies,  as with a bit of work they can look quite nice, and with a better chassis they can be made into good little runners. I have built most of their cars, and this Chaparral 2D is my latest attempt.

Cheers

Here is the starting point,.....a good overall shape, but, lacking detail, and a rather hideously performing chassis

As the Strombecker does not have clear headlight lenses, (and I was not about to cut them out and make "clear" lenses,) I have built the car to resemble the P.Hill/O. Gendebien car from the Nurburgring, as it ran with painted lenses.

First step was the chassis, and I have built a simple single rail, powered by an FK050 motor,.........given that it is quite narrow, and, has a short guide lead, it motors around surprisingly well.

The body has had a few bits made /added, and has been painted with an "off white" which is more accurate.

Yep, looks great.

A couple questions:

. Is there movement in the chassis somewhere?

. How do you paint white over red, any special undercoat?

Thanks,

Don

Great paint job. It looks like it was molded in white.

Chassis don't necessarily need movement if they're flexible enough without it. You might also be surprised to find that shorter guide lead works better. The old manufacturers in the early days of slots might have known something, or it was just what they had to do to keep the guide under bodies of some of the short early sports cars. Beautiful chassis and very nice looking car over all.
