F-1 on the Royal – 6/6/23
In a shakedown race for this weekend’s NERR event, the MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series ran F-1 on the American Royal last night. Six racers presented their cars to tech. Racing was run on all eight lanes in the 4/4 format resulting in a dozen heats on the evening.
F-1 Cars in Tech:
Bob “Woody” Hazelwood jumped out to an early lead as Dave Panich was struggling with degraded handling due to a wall/floor crash during practice that resulted in, or maybe from, a broken pan stop. A quick repair didn’t quite solve his problem and he spent the rest of the night trying to regain his pre-crash handling.
Joe Yates and Bobby Blanchette were running close and by the move to the inside lanes were tied for third with 168 laps each while Woody was in the lead with 175 laps and four laps back Dave was in second place. Richard Payne was in fifth with 162 laps and Rolly Lapierre Jr, in his first race back after some medical issues, was running in sixth, four laps behind Richard.
After the move to the inside lanes, Woody continued to lead, eventually taking the win by five laps over Dave. The tie between Bobby and Joe was broken with Joe scoring his first ever podium by a 3-lap margin. Congratulations to Joe! Richard and Rolly closed out the field.
Woody took fast-lap honors by over a tenth with a 3.726 lap on yellow. Everyone else except Rolly posted a lap in the 3.8s with Bobby’s 3.836 being the best of the rest.
