Recently I ran into an exceptional deal on two near-mint Cox controllers.

Is there a guide that could tell me what I have?

The plastic cases and the aluminum shaft for the plunger are different colors, for example.

Thanks for any leads on information!

There's some info here:

Cox vintage controllers

And probably here on Slotblog too; but I don't think anybody's ever come up with a definitive list for the Cox controllers.

I thought the aluminum shafts would always be... aluminum, and therefore different from the plastic cases.

Don:,

One of the controllers that I have has a bare aluminum shaft and the other appears to be aluminum anodized gold.

Ah, I'll have to take another look at my Cox controllers, wherever they are...

I haven't had a Cox controller in a very long time. What I remember was that the basic controllers had solid color, opaque handles, and plain aluminum plunger shafts.

The premium models had the fancier translucent and metallic/candy color plastic handles and the plunger shafts were gold anodized. These were like the "Pro-series" Cox controllers, and at least some had switch-selectable multiple resistances.

I believe all of the Cox controllers had a finned aluminum shaft but as mentioned on some of the higher end ones it was anodized gold.  I know on the Mark 7, which I believe was the one with the variable resistance slide switch on the bottom, the finger button on top of the shaft was "ergonomically" shaped.  I'm not sure if any of the other models used that shaped button.  The Mark 7 also had a coiled main cord and came with a phone plug to three alligator clip adapter.

The green was 7.5, red 15, black like 20 Ohms. Not sure on the Pro, just less than 7.5.
