Eight slot-heads showed up to race Jalopy and Can-Am at STR on 2/26/24. Track conditions were good and competition was fierce
Race Summary
- In the Jalopy race it was Bob, Ron and Rich for first through third respectively
- In the Can-Am race it was Bob, Rich and Mark for first through third respectively
The Jalopy class has been a mainstay at STR. The class features a sophisticated OSCAR based hinged, in-line chassis with small tires. Power is supplied by ProSlot 16d, Deathstar or Hawk/Falcon type motors.
.
Bob, Rich, Joe, Mark and Ron are the only competitors to have broken the 80 lap threshold and as such should be fighting for a podium spot. Bob is the undisputed favorite winning 9 of the last 9 Jalopy races
Jalopy Current Race
As expected, Bob wailed on the field turning 84.6 laps. Meanwhile, Ron, Rich and Mark battled it out for the remaining podium spots. Going into the final heat, Rich was already in the barn with 81.3 laps. Ron needed 21 laps to overtake Rich for second place and in fact turned a good final heat to finish second, only a single section ahead of Rich.
Editors Note: Mike had a brain fade and brought his 50 Olds which should run in the Vintage NASCAR rather than the Jalopy class. I guess we are all getting old. Next time we will send Visiting Angels to help Mike select the proper vehicle for the race
OSCAR based Can-Am is one of my favorite classes. The cars are super low and wide. That coupled with a sophisticated hinged, in-line chassis with small wheels yields a great handling class. Power is supplied by Deathstar and ProSlot 16D motors or Hawk or Falcon units. Most racers have migrated to the Lotus body which seems to work best. Unfortunately these are hard to find in either resin or plastic.
Can-Am Current Race
Bob entered the first heat on the blue lane and as such was the first to finish his rotation turning 88.2 laps and setting a marker for the rest of the field. Rich and Mark had a chance to eclipse Bobs total but in the end failed to do so. Going into the final heat, Rich was ahead of Mark by a half lap or so and managed to increase his lead throughout, finishing second with 87.6 laps about a lap ahead of Mark.
A couple of competitors were channeling Jim Hall and entered their Chappies. I have included images of each below.
Editors Note: Bob, Rich and Ron have migrated to the Cheetah 4 motor. The cars may not be as quick as with other power plants but are easier to handle. Time will tell if this motor is the best choice for Can-Am cars or if Deathstar or Pro-Slot 16ds make for a better choice.
