Race Summary
Seven slot-heads showed up to race Can-Am/Gran Sport and GT1 on 4/22/24. Thanks to Super Sub Ken for bulking up the field. Track conditions were quite good because the track had been cleaned and sprayed recently.
- In Can-Am/Gran Sport it was Bob, Rich and Lowell for first through third respectively
- In GT1 it was Rich, Bob and Ron for first through third respectively.
At Electron Raceway, I have combined the Can-Am class with Endurance machines of the 60s and 70s (Class is formally called Gran Sport) including the Porsche 917, GT40, Corvette Grand Sport and others. The Can-Am and Gran Sport cars have similar wheelbase and width. Maybe the biggest difference is that the Can-Am cars are open cockpit, and the Gran Sport cars are closed. Competitors can select either True Scale spec or OSCAR spec rides. The True Scale cars feature production H-Bracket chassis. Either Deathstar or ProSlot 16D sealed motors are utilized and mounted in an angle-winder or sidewinder configuration. The OSCAR based cars feature in-line; scratch-build, hinged chassis coupled with 16D or Hawk/Falcon/Cheetah motors.
Can-Am/Gran Sport Current Race
The grid was populated by four GT40s (Rich, Ron, Mark and Ken), two Lotus (Bob and Lowell) and a lone Lola T-70 (Joe).
Editor’s Notes:
- Ken’s GT40 featured an Econo style “rattle” chassis with Deathstar power.
- The GT40s driven by Ron and Rich were both True Scale cars featuring H-Bracket chassis while Mark’s was an OSCAR spec car.
There were some incredibly close battles up and down the field.
- Bob’s margin of victory over second place Rich was only a few feet
- Lowell’s third place finish (a personal best of 87.3 laps) was only a single section better than Joe’s fourth place Lola T70
- Mark bested Ron by only a single section (Both were driving GT40s – Mark’s car was OSCAR spec while Ron’s was True Scale spec)
See below for detailed results and images of the cars.
These cars are fast and fun to drive. Wide and low slung GT1 bodies coupled with Hawk 7 power, make this our quickest and best handling class.
GT1 Current Race
The GT1 grid was populated by several Enzos (Bob, Joe, Ken and Lowell). Other makes included The Toyota GT-One (Rich), a Jaguar XJR8LM (Ron), Nissan R390 (Mark)
Editor’s Note: Ken’s Enzo was a loaner supplied from Rich’s stable of GT1 cars. The Enzo chassis was a rebuild since its last outing. A larger front pan coupled with wider side pans were fabricated and attached. A new, stiffer and longer guide tongue was fabricated to take advantage of the Enzo’s front overhang. The car was very stable and ran quite well in practice.
All of the GT1 cars on the grid were unbelievably closely matched with fast lap times between 4.942 and 5.123 seconds. In fact, the top five finishers turned fast lap times only .05 seconds apart.
- Rich’s Toyota edged out Bob’s second place Enzo by less than a lap
- The battle for the bottom step of the podium was hotly contested with Ron’s great looking Jaguar XJR8LM edging out fourth place Joe by less than a lap and fifth place Lowell by about a lap and a half.
- Ken ran a near personal best of 85.4 laps. It is interesting to note that Ken ran 22.4 and 23 laps on the yellow and black lane respectively. Similar results on the other two lanes would have put him in contention for a podium finish
