This is from the Rick Davis collection. I was surprised to learn he was working on double inside gear around 1967? Looks like a Martex style commutator but on a .005 blank. I think it is a Dyna-Rewind especially by the balance.

This was common for the 1/32 club cars of the1960s. By this method you could get a sidewinder in a narrow scale body, most of which were fiberglass.

Mike - Inside gears were also a hot ticket at the Lombard (Chcago Suburb) GLENWOOD 1/32 Race Club that I raced with in the late 1960s.

If nothing else, club racers of the 50's and early 60's were innovative. While some guys in my group would shell out for a Bonner motor, most of us used a 3 volt motor we bought from a local electronics store, 24 to a case. IIRC they worked out to about 15 cents each. We'd gear them up until they went poof, then toss it in the sh*tcan and put a new one in, dropping the pinion gear a tooth.
