Amateur Cox Chap resto attempt

Didn't get before pics of the body but it was the standard old yellow glue glue bomb. Was able to break all the glue joints without much trouble to disassemble. Biggest problem is cracked windshield and two missing exhaust stacks on one side.
Already did a lot of work with no progress pics but the rear body post was warped/melted up into the outer surface to where there was a big lump behind the injectors. Fixed that as good as I could and the dash was a glue bomb so I repaired as good as I could and scribed some new window trim lines.
Not trying to make it perfect but make it a little more presentable than a glue bomb. Need to buy some Tamiya primer before any further progress.

The chassis brings back memories. I never had a Chaparral, mine were Lotus 40 and Cheetah. Even looks like the same Graupner foam rubber tires I replaced the solid rubber rears with.

Mark,
I had one of these Chappys too and I remember the first time I deslotted, the velocity stacks got trashed. The second time I deslotted, both the exhaust banks got trashed. And somewhere along the line, I lost half the headlight lenses. So not a very robust design but it was originally quite stunning.
My suggestion is to restore it to its original glory and then find a nice spot for it on the shelf.

Mark,
I have some good leftover parts you are in need of from a Cox Chap 2 I restored several years ago. It to was a glue bomb, but turned out pretty nice. I was fortunate (?) in finding complete chrome tree, original decal sheet, and new clear plastic pieces on eBay. $$$.
I took some pics but can't figure out how to load photos on this web site. If anyone can help I will gladly post the pictures I took.

Thanks! I actually have everything for the body besides half an exhaust on one side. Thinking about making brass ones and cut the body out for them.

Nice projec, Mark. Kids back in the day didn't make restoration easy with their liberal use of those squeeze tubes of plastic glue.

Think I got lucky. This didn't seem that bad compared to others!
Covered up lumpy dash with some scrap plastic from a blister pack
Before:
After: this will look much better when you look through the broken and crash windscreen hehe.
While primer dries I messed with driver figure. ground off mold lines, reshaped his deformed chest and carved in some digits. Not sure if I want to use the giant head or more scale one yet.

Nice windscreens! mine has seen better days but Im thinking of cutting out the broken area and make a air duct sorta deal on mine to clean it up. mask off a nice thin line around the edge and paint flat black to look like trim. Id rather not use nice parts on this and let them go to someone with more skills and a nicer build.C2 windscreen.jpg
Mark,
This is what I have, center windscreen is a Brad Blohm resin repop.

Got rear deck better after more sanding and another coat of primer.
role bar holes are kind of a mess still but got glue melted plastic crevasses smooth. finding it easier to just cover stuff than make it perfect with filler. these 1/16 axle collars are perfect size and will make nice base to mount a more scale 1/16 brass roll bar to.

I would love to help with your restoration Mark.
When it comes time to make a roll bar, I have been using this 1/16" Nickel rod. It shines up like chrome and is easy to bend and solder.
P.M. me I can send you some.
These are pics of parts I have made so I do not have week plastic part to deal with.
This roll bar is for the Cox Lotus and is made from brass and then I used the chrome pen.

If you have a model car kit with headers included, like a gasser or altered, use the headers upside-down in the openings. This was a popular application in Can-Am in the late 1960's when the Can-Am teams were playing with different types of exhaust systems.. Like this LeGrand F-5000 car used. (F-5000 was SCCA's attempt to use the old Can-Am cars in a new series)

As a fellow SoCal hot rodder here are some examples of those "big honk'n pipes" we both like on 60's sports racers:

Nice save! i used steel tig rod for my roll bar. When I done this Chap that had front and rear 1/4" of body melted with glue, I decided to modify a little, this is how I dealt with the exhausts, using aluminium tube & tig welding rod.
