Can-Am on the Figure 8 – 7/9/24

MVH Tuesday night Retro racers headed to the Figure 8 this week to run their Can-Am cars. Ten Tuesday night regulars were joined by long-time racer Speedy Lang as eleven drivers presented their cars to tech with racing on the middle six lanes over eleven heats.

From the onset, there was a lot of on-track action with multiple cars needing visits to the pits for repairs of one sort or another making it difficult to develop a rhythm for the track. Despite the chaos, there was close racing throughout the field, other than the race for the win. In that department, John Weaver drove away from everyone else, posting blistering lap times on his way to winning the race by a 25-lap margin over second place.

However, the race for second was another story with Cody Pare and Woody Hazelwood running neck-and-neck for the entire race. When time ran out, the podium order was determined by two track sections as Woody edged Cody for second. Dave Panich finished two laps off the podium in fourth while Rolly Lapierre Jr. claimed fifth. Further back, there was another close race as Richard Payne took seventh place from a somewhat faster Speedy Lang by two laps and, at the back of the pack, John Esposito took ninth place by a one lap margin over Dan Savage.

Not only did Woody and Cody finish within ten feet of each other, their fast lap times were identical. However, Weaver’s fast lap was a tenth and a half faster. Although finishing well back in the field, Speedy did post the fifth fastest lap of the night. The purple lane was the quick way around the Figure 8 this week as five of the eleven drivers posted their fastest time on purple.
