I had a friend who had a Maule Rocket https://www.aopa.org...-sheets/maule-6 and we would take it to a grass field and see how quick we could get it off the ground. It was a lot of fun.

Looks like fun. I'm surprised that an ultralight would need STOL tips, but I can see that for this type of competition you would. I'd try it. Ma would have, too.
Ma liked big horsepower. If you showed up at an airport with a radial, she was there sniffing around. Unfortunately, she was limited to what she could beg or borrow.
Short Take Off or Landing has been around for a while. In WWII the Germans had the Feiseler Storch, which into a 15 mph headwind, could fly backwards.
