So Dodge is going to sell the new Charger EV with simulated engine sounds. This article from Hagerty includes a short snippet of what it will sound like.

https://www.hagerty....zonic-exhaust/?

One thing nice about my Challenger, is that, cranked up, the stereo is REALLY LOUD!!! So for years I have toyed with the idea of putting some tracks from my Big Sounds of the Drags albums on disc, so I can play them through that stereo. I imagine pulling up behind some souped-up Nissan Sentra at a stop light, with the sound of a top fuel hemi blasting from my car. It certainly would overwhelm his tin can cat back exhaust system. I'd like to hear his comment to himself.

Just the idea of artificial sound from a electric car is repugnant to me.

Agreed! When I'm old enough (95+) and have retired to a one horse town, I'll get one of those gas fueled (preferably two stroke) tricycles to drive to the grocery store. But I'll replace the factory muffler with a "competition" one so that everyone in my small town will known that the hot rodding silver fox is out and about and scowl.

Plus I'll have an old wringer washer on my front porch in which I'll keep goldfish, a rusted hulk of some sort (Edsel, Corvair, Pinto, Monza?) in my yard and a goat to keep down the grass so I don't have to mow it.

:wink2:

Similar to non meat eaters. The plant based burgers are designed to taste like a beef burger. :)

I have had the same vision. I'll be sitting on some old log in front of wherever I end up, wondering what happened to me. I will have become used to the sound of electric cars, missing the burnouts we used to do in my neighborhood. I'll watch the kids zipping around on their electric scooters, knowing they will never experience the chance of being a neighborhood nuscience.

But do they? I haven't found one. But what really bothers me, is I have become so used to the black bean burgers, I don't miss the real beef ones. Is that what's happening to society? We are now accepting the substitutes as our first choice?

By the way, the Chicago Air and Water Show is this weekend. Over the last two days I have been treated to the sounds of vintage aircraft, with their radial engines. What a joyous noise!

As someone who was almost hit by a hybrid that came up behind me in a parking lot, that I didn't hear, I would welcome some sort of artificial sounds for EVs & hybrids. I might not have someone walking towards me another time.

We now have a Cybertruck in the neighborhood, (I'll try to get pictures). Oddly for it's size, it is pretty quiet. What makes matters worse, it is painted a flat dark grey. I haven't seen it at night, but I would guess it is pretty much invisable. It goes by the house at about 7:00am every morning, and 4:30 every afternoon. So I should be able to get a picture. Besides, it isn't going to fit in any garage, so it should be sitting out on the driveway of the owner's house when it is home. I just need to do a search of the area.

Looks like a young kid driving it. Graduation or birthday gift, maybe?

"painted a flat dark grey"

That is strange, I thought they were all raw stainless steel panels. No?

They definitely aren't all stainless or I should say they don't stay raw stainless.

I've recently seen at least 2 in the mile or two stretch where my home,  the raceway, and the Tesla dealership all reside.

One in a matte finish, either black or possibly the same dark grey one that's in Dave's neighborhood, that's about 15-20 minutes from the raceway.

The most recent one was a bright French blue.

I couldn't get my camera out quickly/safely enough, to get a pic.

I thought it looked real cool.

I'm guessing guys are having them wrapped so they even stand out more than they already do. Lol

I haven't seen any up close and in the sun, but in pictures I have seen, it appears that the panels don't match. Possibly the stainless steel wasn't polished all in the same direction. Could be customers are ordering them wrapped to correct that. In any event, as soon as I am mobile again, I intend to hunt it down and get some good pictures.

By the way, another one went by late yesterday afternoon while I was talking with a neighbor. He didn't know what it was, and he is a car guy. This one in polished bare metal. Hope this isn't going to be a new fad in this end of town. People around here have to have what everyone else has. It started when Teslas first came out. There were 13 in this corner of town. Then it was the big Acura SUV. Then Porsche Macans, then Alfa Romeo Stelvios, and last year, the new Ford Broncos. Earlier this summer I started seeing a lot of Jeep Gladiators in the area. Around here, if you don't have the latest "in" car, you just can't be part of the "clique".

Agreed. Silent is dangerous. Some fifty years ago I almost stepped in front of a car in the dead quiet at 3:30 AM crossing a very sparsely traveled little street separating the Labatt bottling plant from the employee break room. I should have been able to hear the car from a quarter mile away but I forgot that I was still wearing my ear plugs.

Well, we definitely have a second Cybertruck in the area. Saw it pass by the house a little bit ago. At least I think it is the same one that passed by Sunday. If it isn't, and there is a third one, I'm writing a nasty letter to the city council complaining that these things are detrimental to their "beautify Elmhurst" program.  :tease:

In any event, I think the flat dark grey/black one belongs to a kid that goes to York High School, since he passes by at the same time the school busses do. ( I'm sure it actually belongs to daddy, since he is too young to own a vehicle in this state.)

Just saw one of the cyber trucks yesterday and it had a cap on it. Made it look even worse.

Hilarious video! But in some respects, I am impressed. Maybe it would, with a few modifications, make it as an urban assault vehicle. But it is the quality issues, particularly with the computer systems, that really scare me. But in real life, very few people are going to make use of the features the truck excelled at.

I try to sit out on the front steps on afternoons when I'm feeling good, and sure enough, the dark grey Cybertruck has passed by a few times. Naturally, I forget to take my camera or cell phone with. It is diffinitely a VERY dark grey matte flat, almost black. To add to that one, Sunday I was goofing around with Google Earth, and was panning over the downtown Elmhurst area, and I spotted what looked like a Cybertruck in the Walgreen's parking lot. I changed to street view, and sure enough, it was a very bright red or possibly orange Cybertruck. Google Earth is not actually real time, so that truck had to have been in town some time ago. Possibly six months. But if I am scoring properly, that makes four Cybertrucks in my area. The black, maybe two bare metal, and the red one.

On the Ch 5 news they showed one done up in Dead Pool v. Wolverine graphics, somewhere in Chicago. Maybe they should have used the Cybertruck to catch the runaway caravan in this scene;

This guy's Cypertruck and the modest size of the 2 car garages in our townhouse community don't seem like they will coexist very well.

He(?) moved in about 3 months ago and seems to change cars more often than I change my underwear.

His(?) garage seems like it's always open but I've never seen an adult. Just a 6 or 7 year old cute little girl, on a scooter.

There is always 3 cars. Originally he had a red 911GTS convertible. Then, for a short time, a black 911 Turbo convertible with dealer plates. Then back to the red  one. Lately, no Porsche's, just non-descript Tesla's and white BMW or Mercedes SUV's.

He must work in the auto industry.

If you want a Cybertruck, you need a house like this one two blocks from me, that has an attached coach house large enough to hold it.

abighouse2.JPG

The builder is living in it, and he parks his Ford Super Duty pick-up, which I'll bet is as big as the Tesla, in one of the four stalls in the coach house, with room to spare. The house is currently for sale, (actually it has been since he finished it. In DuPage county If you built the house and use it as a model home, you don't have to pay property tax on the improvement, [house], only the lot. )  Asking is just short of $3 mil.

I drove by the local Tesla dealer a little while ago and they had 10 or 12 of the trucks on the front of the lot. I can't believe they are going to sell that many.
