On a Group 12 wing car, when would you want an arm with advance and an arm without advance?

I understand it's an open question, just trying to learn.

Started racing slot cars back at the old Grand Avenue Raceway on Grand Ave. in Chicago, Illinois.
Started with Group 12, moved up to Group 27 and Open.
Still have my two cars and over a dozen arms.
Just recently discovered a track local to me and am looking forward to meeting up with the old timers and new people in the hobby.

Bob,

A PMDC motor needs some level of timing advance to be able to run.

I think your question should be how much advance does an X12 motor need.

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

Thank you...

And with that, to what end would you want more advance?

G12 timing depends on track power .

The next three Grp12 wing car races are at:

Mid-America, Buffalo Grove - King track

Mid-America, Bloomington - Hillclimb

Lucky Bob/s, Milwaukee - Hillclimb

At what point do you make the decision to run a Grp 12 with more or less advance?

I like to use higher advance on higher-speed and/or higher-power tracks. You can alway use lots on any King I've ever seen. A bit less advance gives you more torque but less top RPM in my experience. I always go with less advance on flat tracks. Hillclimbs tend to need more acceleration and braking for the way I drive (not the best) so I like less advance.

For me, 38° on flat, 42° on Hillclimb, and 48° on high-speed, high-voltage king is where I start testing. You should try different timings since my driving style may not be similar to yours.

Typically, I'm running 40-44 degree arms, sometimes with +4 degree endbells... usually looking to be around 44-46 degrees total advance.

This is for both NASRA OMB and NASRA HB12 cars, racing at PJ Raceway in Farmingville, NY. Fast track, typically 14.2 volts race power.

Your mileage may vary, and what works for me may not work for you.
