Charles Lynn was "The Wolfman" among those INDYCAR fans who knew him as a newspaper salesman at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indiana State Fair.
Chucky (as he was also known) sold copies of the Indianapolis Star newspaper to help support himself and also to cover some of his medical expenses since he had suffered with Cerebral Palsy since birth.
His distinctive voice could be heard all over the Speedway during the month of May.
"Paypah Mistah?"
Lynn's autobiography was published in 2012, and all of the proceeds have been donated to various Indianapolis charities, including the CROP walk. Supposedly, Roger Penske purchased the first signed copy of the book for several times the cover price of $20.
Charles had limited hand use, so he used a rubber stamp with his signature and asked those who purchased his book to write in the personalization for him.
Chuck lost his ongoing battle with illness and depression on August 26, 2024.
Wolfman in my mind was as much a part of Indy 500 lore as the Gordon Pipers, the bottle of milk in Victory Circle, Larry Bisceglia, or Tom Carnegie.
When his obituary is published, I will copy it here (link below).
Godspeed Wolfman.
