Can-Am on the Figure 8 – 9/21/24
The MVH Tuesday night retro series returned to action this past Tuesday after a two-week break so Richard could spend some time away from the track. Racing resumed on the Figure 8 with the Can-Am class and nine racers heading to tech. Racing was in the 4 on/5 off format, running the outside lanes first and then moving to the inside lanes over 18 heats.
Given the fast lap times (3 seconds), the racing in the middle of the field was close, though John Weaver opened an early lead and was never challenged on his way to another win. At the move to the inside lanes, John had logged 234 laps giving him a handy thirteen lap lead over Bob Hazelwood in second place. In third place Dave Panich trailed by seven laps while enjoying a six-lap lead over Cody Pare. With 206 laps, John Esposito was just two laps behind Cody and one lap ahead of Rolly Lapierre Jr. while Richard Payne was another two laps behind Rolly. Joe Yates and Dan Savage closed out the field.
With the close racing, positions in the second half of the race shifted quite a bit, except for the podium. John continued his blistering pace to take the win by twenty-nine laps while Bob held on to second, edging Dave by just two laps for the position. Rolly moved up from sixth to fourth as Cody had some difficulties on the inside lanes and dropped to fifth in the final standings. Finishing sixth, Richard got around Espo, who also was struggling on the inside lanes, as he dropped from fifth to seventh place. Joe finished eighth while Dan stayed in ninth place.
Race winner John Weaver also posted the fastest lap of the night with a 2.851 on orange. Bob wasn’t far off the pace with a 2.906 best lap, also on orange.
