Formula 1 on the King – 9/24/24

The MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series headed to the Gerding King to run F-1 this week. The field of nine ran the middle six lanes over nine heats with three marshals. The lead-on marshal was also in charge of running the track call button.

Ray Lee, back from a successful trip to California to run wing cars, and Bobby Blanchette, who has been missing for a couple of months, joined the remaining Tuesday night regulars for an evening of close racing.

Rob Hayes had the early speed and was in a tight race with Cody Pare, Bob “Woody” Hazelwood and Ray before having to head to the pits for some chassis repair. At about the same time, Woody split his guide into two pieces and, after completing the heat with a loaner, also headed to the pits. Being a Tuesday night, we paused to allow them some time to get their cars patched up, but when they returned, neither car was quite like it was before.

As the race continued, Ray suffered controller problems, taking him out of contention. The result of all this was Cody cruised to the front of the pack, tallying 246 laps and taking the win by four laps over Rob. With 241 laps on the counter, Woody was another lap back in third, finishing just two track sections in front of Dave Panich.

Bobby Blanchette was the best of the rest, finishing fifth with 234 laps. Rolly Lapierre Jr. trailed by three laps in sixth while Ray Lee had to settle for seventh. At the back of the field, John Esposito and Richard Payne finished with identical 226 lap totals with Espo taking eighth by six track sections.

Rob had the fastest lap of the night with a 4.125 on green. Cody’s 4.218 on orange was the next fastest time, almost a full tenth slower, while Ray had the third fastest lap.

Overall Finishing order, laps completed, best lap time, best lap lane:

  1. Cody Pare                246/0     4.218    OR
