Chuck Gambo returned a May '69 Car and Driver he had borrowed from me, and pointed this out.

Mike, no mention of the raceway in the rest of the article?

Car and Driver, in this time frame, was weirdly hostile to slot car racing, under editor Leon Mandel. This is exemplified by the article about Cukras and Howie.

Mike, thanks for posting that section of the article. Maybe we should make racers wear suit and ties at big races.

Was there a parochial/private high school nearby?
That might explain the jackets and ties.
I did notice one, and maybe a second person wearing bowling shoes.
IIRC, that was a minor fad for a short time in the Chicago area.

The raceway was under the bowling alley. Could explain the bowling shoes.

Except they had slot car boxes.
Maybe they were there to do both.

I have vague memories of attending the Elmsford race. I remember the lap counter going bad in the semi and having to restart. Anyone else remember that?
I also remember actually wearing sport jackets to a race or two after the Car and Driver report, more of a joke than anything else. That didn't last long LOL.

I don't take the article as just negative/hostile. Just a dose of reality.
I did send these pics to Michael Del Rosario at ERI, and along with his thanks, he mentioned Elmsford got the Car & Driver write ups inspired by Leon Mandel bringing his son there to race.
