Follow the white rabbit. Sorry. the Matrix popped in my head when I saw what I had typed for the title. But let's chase this rabbit hole just the same.

Has anyone put neo magnets in a C-can with a Group 20 arm? I expect extreme heat would result, so would this only be good for a drag application or could it be run with a wing car?

If anybody has, it's probably John Havlicek over on Facebook.

The magnets both cobalt and neo are available to build that.

For drag cars, heat is not a issue.

It would run fine. It would just need to be geared appropriately.

You certainly could gear it more aggressively than a 20 arm with ceramic magnets.

The one caveat is from myself holding wing races with fast neo magnet motors, the cars don't take off smoothly which creates popping issues.

There could be a potential issue with the heat generated by a G20 arm effecting the neo magnets. The reason why neo magnets are so popular in drag racing with up to open class armatures is that the short run time doesn't generate enough heat to kill the magnets. This appears to be a concern with circuit track motors, although I've been playing with some hot wind neo drag motors in wing cars.

So far, they're fine in short stints and with mild-enough gearing, they don't work too hard, but I'm not up to running them for anything like race duration stints. Since cobalt C-can magnets are available, I'd much prefer those in a G20, though they're a bit more expensive than neo for a F-can.

Another reason could be that there's no neo magnets sized for a drop-in fit to a C-can, only the somewhat larger D-can "Crazy Horse" poly-neo magnets.

The neo mags these days have so much more heat handling capabilities than they use to.

A few years ago I let a guy use a wing car with one of my CR106 Stage 6 motors when the endbell bushing melted out of the plastic endbell of his G12 motor in the first heat.

He ran fast lap time of the heat, every heat, for the rest of the race, racing against 'built' G12 motors.

And plus, when you factor in guys are soldering neo motors of all ilks in flexi chassis, heat is no longer an issue.
