Here's a short video explaining how centerless grinding works. It's the process that finishes axles to size and creates the fine finish for use in oilite bushings.

Is it cheaper or better?

Better, by far. In centerless grinding you can easily hold tenths (.0001") The finish is better.

Turning and polishing can't come close.

Not my favorite method of grinding. I was the next operation after grinding. When the OD was ground to size, the machine would push on the end to clear the part. As the part exited, the last quarter inch or so would develop an out of round condition of .0001". This was a problem when the total tolerance was .0001" (Class Z gage wires).

I reflexively check for an out of round condition on the end of axles.

That was with through-feed grinders, and the better machines had hold-down on the exit chute that prevented that. I first started using centerless grinders in the early 1970s, and seldom had an issue when the wheel was properly dressed and everything set up properly.

Otherwise, this is a handy little rig for doing one or two pins;
