Coupe on the Figure 8 – 10/1/24

 

 

GT Coupe headed to the figure 8 this week in MVH’s Tuesday Night Retro Series. A field of eleven racers presented cars to tech with racing on the middle six lanes over eleven heats. One driver ran the computer with four marshals manning the corners.

 

With John Weaver leading the field for the entire race and Bob Hazelwood solidly in second place, the hotly contested race was for the bottom podium step as Cody Pare, Ray Lee, Dave Panich and Rolly Lapierre Jr. all were in contention. Early on, Dave had a chassis failure and resorted to his backup car. Just past the midway point in the race, Cody suffered a similar chassis failure and finished the race with loaners from both Dave and Weaver. Though fast, Ray was “savaged” in too many instances and lost too many laps to challenge for the podium. On the other hand, Rolly picked up the pace in the second half of the race and squeezed by Dave to take third by one lap, while Ray, in fifth place, trailed Dave by another lap when the checkered flag flew.

 

Further back in the field, Joe Yates, John Esposito, Richard Payne and Rick Pare were all running close together with Joe, at 310 laps, taking seventh. Espo finished three laps behind Joe and two laps up on Richard Payne who had Rick Pare, trailing by a lap, pushing him along. Dan Savage closed out the field.

 

Weaver’s 2.844 on orange was the fastest lap of the night with Cody, in his final heat, posting the second fastest lap at 2.906. Bob put up the only other sub-3 second lap with a 2.969 on orange.
