The Northwest Retro Racing League has been in operation, with some brief interludes, since 2008.  During that time, our races have taken place on three different tracks.  What we now call the blue track started the series in Spokane.  It has been updated twice in that interval.  For several years, we would alternate between the blue track and the "Montana track," which originated there but has since moved to Spokane and now is in storage somewhere near Coulee City.  In 2019, the club venue moved to Palouse Slots and Hobbies, in the town of Palouse, near the college town of Pullman.

Host Leroy Sanders now operates both the blue and red tracks out of the hobby store, and we race (weather permitting) 8 months of the year, from March through October.  So this was the last race of our 17th year.

To commemorate the occasion, we took a group photo of the 10 racers who showed up for the event.  Regulars Tom Brown and John Wimett were unable to make this race, but most of the rest of the regulars are shown here.

We routinely alternate between the red and blue tracks, running races in order from (generally) slowest to fastest cars:  stock cars, formula, Can Am, Coupe.  But the blue track unexpectedly had a lap counter issue just before race time, so we ran all the races on the red track today.

First up was stock cars.  In this race the podium racers quickly separated from the rest of the pack, and there were two clusters of racers.  The top 3 racers were all in the 140s:

1.  Robert Clements      144

2.  Tom Sunday              141

3.  Leroy Sanders          140

Then there was a large pack of racers from 120-131:

4.  Paul Dwyer               131

5.  Ken Bryan                 129

6.  Dave Cuellar             125

7.  Tim Robertson           121

8.  Frank Sperle              120

9.  Dennis Tando             110

10.  Larry Flyn                  89

Same track, new class.  Formula cars were next on the agenda.  Amazingly, the winning lap total was exactly the same as the previous class, and the same winner.  Would Robert Clemens sweep the field?  It has been known to happen, and the last 2 classes are his strongest.  Wait and see...

There was an intense battle for the final podium spot.  I started the heat with a one-lap lead on Paul Dwyer, but was in the more difficult (yellow) lane.  I managed to hold him off for most of the heat, but he passed me near the end and took third by a matter of a few feet.

1.  Robert Clements        144

2.  Leroy Sanders            139

3.  Paul Dwyer                 134  (Spokane racers finished 3-4-5)

4.  Ken Bryan                   134

5.  Tim Robertson             127  (2 laps separated positions 5-8)

6.  Mr. Sunday                  126

7.  Dave Cuellar                126

8.  Dennis Tando               125

9.  Frank Sperle                119

10.  Larry Flyn                  110   (personal best)

LUNCH TIME!!!

As usual, Leroy and his wife Cheryl put on a fantastic spread for lunch.  Usually I don't capture it in pictures, but today I did.  Ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, salad, and 3 kinds of pie a la mode.

Tell me we are not spoiled in the Northwest Retro League...

OK, now that we are all in a food coma, we answer the question as to whether Robert Clements can continue his dominance.  It turns out he would only have one competitor:  track owner Leroy.  For the third straight race (how bizarre is that?)  Robert posted a 144 lap total.  But this time Leroy did him one better, pulling out the win.  Denied the podium last time by a few feet, I managed what I believe to be only my second podium ever on the red track with a 3rd place finish.

Results and pictures:

1.  Leroy Sanders      145

2.  Robert Clements   144

3.  Ken Bryan              134

4T.  Tim Robertson     130

4T.  Mr. Sunday           130  (I forgot to write down who was ahead for this tie)

6.  Paul Dwyer             128

7.  Frank Sperle           123

8.  Dennis Tando         118

9.  Dave Cuellar           116

10.  Larry Flyn               99

Unfortunately, I somehow managed to leave the raceway without the lap totals for the last class of the year, which was retro  Coupe.  I can share pictures of the cars and the winner's podium.  Paul Dwyer took home the final win of the day and the season, edging out second place Leroy Sanders and third place Robert Clements.
